Tying your morning’s posts together, I think this is related to that segment of Science Twitter which isn’t “seeing” a drop in engagement; counting followers (be they bots or real people) is faster, easier and more ego-boosting to put on bios and grants akin to citation and publication counts

Yeah, I'm sure that's a big part of it. I used to ask questions there and get answers and have discussions. Now I ask questions and get two likes from bots and one person trying to tell me that they've somehow placed their genitals into their twitter bio.
