This one had me stumped for a good hour. Turns out to be the only representative of its family in North America. Ten points if you recognize it.

Loved the reflections on your garden, which sounds amazing. I think every little bit does help, and as someone who has spent the week moving dirt all over the yard building new beds, I appreciate the mental reset the process brings!

Marlin is an amazing suggestion, but it’s a dance fly, most likely in the family Empididae. Great photo!

Super nerdy invert observation of the day. This is a tiny, midge sized leaf miner fly. Their larva live inside of leaves, quite amazing! And here is the female fly laying eggs. I was pretty excited to get this shot. (Liriomyza sp.) 🐙🧪🌿

I miss Twitter sorely. I miss my friends, I miss my unique connection to the scientific literature through years of curating my feed, and I miss how good it had been for finding new opportunities. But despite all those things I miss, this article perfectly articulates why I quit Twitter cold turkey

I was an early adopter. I published papers about the value of Twitter. I taught classes on social media for environmental communications. I thought I had held out until the very last straw, but that was over a year ago and folks are still over there making hay for the hate machine.

Tying your morning’s posts together, I think this is related to that segment of Science Twitter which isn’t “seeing” a drop in engagement; counting followers (be they bots or real people) is faster, easier and more ego-boosting to put on bios and grants akin to citation and publication counts

I truly hope this isn’t the last time you’re at the front of a classroom, because if it is, it’s a massive loss for Canadian education. Congratulations on a wonderful gesture of support for your students!

Bots have those too, and if he was out deer hunting he could have crossed paths with a nose bot fly potentially? I’m certainly not experienced enough with calyptrate maggots to tell though 😬

An international collaborative endeavour pushed the fly out of the USA and Central America through a massive eradication program in the mid-20th century, and continues today by releasing billions of sterilized flies across Panama to create a biological barrier.

New World Screwworms are fly larvae that infest open wounds in mammals and literally eat their hosts alive. Gruesome, and livestock are particularly susceptible, but so are wild mammals.

The outbreak is beginning to draw the attention of right-wing blowhards who I have no doubt will be correlating this with Central American immigration propaganda.

I haven’t seen any North American news reports on it, but the New World Screwworm seems to have broken containment & is on the move through Central America, with Panama, Costa Rica and now Nicaragua reporting infested cattle. Really significant potential problem that could cost $$$$ to re-eradicate
