POTUS being "out there" never moves the needle, unless you count like Obama's "we just killed Bin Laden" event. The needle almost never moves.

This is the same argument Felix Salmon made for why business folks are supporting him. Makes sense for both groups.

None of these goobers will even advocate for one specific candidate. So they can say exactly that - "No, not Whitmer. America is clearly not ready for a female President. You should he replaced Biden with a different person."

"Someone like..." is an admission that the pundit is unwilling to actually make an affirmative argument for a specific person. I know why they won't do this, but I wonder if they do.

I haven't read all of these takes, but the ones I have read all fail to make a case for a specific person. Most don't mention any names. Some list three or four. I know why, but I wonder if the pundits do.

It feels like there should be a term for this. It has elements of straw man, but there's more going on here. As someone who loses it when a colleague asks a question that was answered in my original email, I can't imagine how you deal with this constantly. Just. Read. What. I. Said.

As someone who desperately wants Biden to win, I winced at the trillionaire line, but whatever. The thing where he got confused and ended with "Medicare died" and then hung his head in defeat was much worse. But the failure to land a blow on Trump on the abortion question was where I lost it.

His "policy positions" and "ideas" are very unpopular! The incoherence is not strategic (he's always been this way to some degree and is obviously showing signs of decline) but it serves a strategic purpose of obscuring the terrible things he wants to do and that he will be the vehicle for.

Setting aside for a moment the fact that he can't do it, what is the focused and disciplined position on Jan6 and the 2020 election that these pundits think he is going to use to win over undecided voters tonight?

I'd argue that it "works" in that it gives folks who were going to support Trump anyway a tiny fig leaf. Like the guy I overheard explaining that in the Hollywood Access tape, Trump wasn't actually bragging about the behvior he was describing. People who aren't paying attention get who he is.

I am ALWAYS suspicious when a white parent says something like this. You aren't doing the public school a favor by sending your rich white kids there. You are helping your kids not grow up to be entitled cryptoracist assholes like you.

What really gets me is when these people decry attempting incremental wins as so difficult as to be impossible... but apparently consider ushering in systemic revolution to be trivial, contingent "only" on winning the hearts of a critical mass of the populace?

And I continue to reject the conflation you are making between Gaza, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. In Afghansitan, the US was the aggressor. The war ended when we left. In Gaza, as an ally to Isreal, we have influence over how it ends. In Ukraine, Russia decides when it ends.

And on "control," I have to admit I am not up to date on the current leftist thinking on IR, but traditionally, they haven't been amenable to US controlling other actors.

You are putting words in my mouth with regards to Israel. While I don't think we should "control" our allies, we certainly can and absolutely should be putting more pressure on them to stop the genocide in Gaza.

I don't know who you are talking about, but it's not me. I am not demanding anything about people's votes. And if there was a settlement on offer, I might be in favor of it (although how it would be enforced is critical).

Even if you are right, we can't dictate terms to Ukraine. And I don't believe you are right. There was no cease fire on the table then. Nor is there one now. You are acting like the aggressor here has no agency. It's like Murc's Law on steroids.

Which leaves Russia gets part of Ukraine now and will almost certainly try for the rest pretty soon. I.e., a negotiated settlement. I guess that's the best option and you try your best to stop Russia for coming back for more. But even then the Ukrainians have to accept that.

But also there aren't many way this war ends. One is Russia annexes Ukraine after/while committing genocide on the population. That is not acceptable. Another is Russia realizes it's not willing to pay the necessary price to get what it wants. Unfortunately, that seems unlikely to happen.

There is certainly a lot of wisdom behind "never escalate and de-escalate when you can." And I am always dubious of positions being pushed by the foreign policy establishment. So maybe that was a bad call.

I wasn't trying to elide anything by referring to Oct 7. I think there are a lot of folks who would have another reason to not vote for Biden if this overt genocide didn't happen. And I know there were folks saying very similar things about Clinton with Iraq and Obama with drones.

And while I believe these folks are expressing honest feelings about Gaza, I also feel pretty sure that if October 7th had never happened, they would have found some other reason to say Biden's accomplishments don't count. The same way drones meant nothing Obama did mattered.
