Behind the scenes, furry conventions like this one are constantly dealing with actionable threats of mass gun violence, even more so in recent years from the ramp-up in dangerous rhetoric in rightwing media. This kind of thing happening has always been a real and terrifying threat.
It’s especially unsettling the more I think about this. I didn’t see this at all. I was just walking around, completely oblivious. Don’t know how *I* will proceed with this. Definitely given me something to think about though.
Tactical /military/police gear and playing war have little to no room in the cultivation of any safe space IMHO.
LGBTQ+ folks have an anti-fascism history without the use of guns.
Plus toy guns will get ya ass shot by any cop here in the states if they came in hot for any reason.
This is the kind of thing I always have at the back of my mind when going to cons. I have no sense of whether there are any sorts of plans or protocols in place to deal with the potential for this kind of violence at a con.
That's a factor in this I have not seen a single other person mention. Most don't realize how many credible threats furry cons and other queer events like this get. While this instance may just be cosplay idiocy, its not pearl-clutching for us as a fandom to collectively recoil from this behavior.
Screw telling staff. Scream "GUN!" call the cops, and make a big deal next time.
Literally treat it like an actual gunman, regardless of anything. Make a panic. Make it a big deal.
Yeah.. As someone who had to deal with two school shootings/threats, mass shootings are horrible and I shouldn't have to say that no one should idealize shooters in any way.
I thought I was sounding crazy for pointing out every con I’ve been to makes you clearly tip and tag prop firearms
*Somebody* dropped the ball and this happened and rightly freaked people out
To my many queer/POC friends who these individuals aimed their weapon at, it doesn't matter to me if one was dressed like some random movie character. What matters is when I immediately reported this to FWA staff, they shrugged them off as "approved", clearly tired of hearing the complaint.
