To my many queer/POC friends who these individuals aimed their weapon at, it doesn't matter to me if one was dressed like some random movie character. What matters is when I immediately reported this to FWA staff, they shrugged them off as "approved", clearly tired of hearing the complaint.
Yeah, this is why many cons are banning Tactical Gear. I mean, for fuq’s sake, we had an Active Shooter threat at MFM last year and we have this going on?!
This is dumb as fuck, in the current climate and with recent history this is not only unnecessary, tonedeaf and daresay utterly offtopic, it's also fiercely dangerous. Even if there are no actual weapons involved a panic could have broken out and people could have gotten trampled, etc.
This shit ain’t a joke. The danger of someone showing up dressed like this is a real threat, and the fact that the staff of FWA shrugged this off is further proof that the convention staff simply doesn’t care about the community.
This is seriously not okay. Whoever gave them the approval for this should be removed from their position and barred from other cons. This could have been a dry run, or could have turned out far worse. Not to mention the message being sent because of the club they're on top of :/
nothing remotely close to this should be allowed at a con, we should not be constantly looking over our shoulders for the threat of spontaneous mass violence because lookalike props are allowed
As someone who enjoys shooting as a hobby the wtf about this is that doesn't look like a toy gun(no orange cap). Lots of cons won't let you carry props that look that realistic.
Dude has his finger on the trigger, that's a sign a gun is going to be fired and is a threat.
The people who are into "tactical cosplay" need to find their own events to go to. American mass shooter trauma is way too ingrained to be able to comfortably allow shit like this. Cultural context is important and it sounds like FWA staff didn't give 2 fucks about it, yikes...
If i was there i would have had a heart attack in the very least
and with my partners anxiety with being out of the home anymore? I dont know if they would go to a furcon ever again. Scared to tell them this even happened.
I dont care if its a toy, its far too realistic in a public space
NGL I think the grossest thing about all of this in the end are the people here saying "well um actually," to this shit. Listen y'all as someone well versed in security (13 years working gigs,) this should have been met with detainment and escort off the premises at *least.*
I think conventions of all kinds need to seriously reassess their stances on tactical/riot cosplay and prop guns. A crowded atrium is not the place to be playing with even a fake gun. Regardless of a cap or zip tie, people will have an immediate mental and emotional response to a sight like that.
People need to keep the larping like this to the flat range. Conventions arent the place for this shit. I have and will mock you for doing this at furcons to your face
Also worth noting, the fact that this happened at the "Pulse" lounge, and not sure how many other folks remember, but there was a shooting at a gay night club called "Pulse" in Orlando, Florida:
that right there is the worst part. If the con immediately banned this guy, that is the way to go. If the con ALLOWED it, thats gross negligence. I will never go to FWA again if their policies were to allow this
Call the organizers out on this. Report it to local news. Let him know that someone thought it was "appropriate" to have someone cosplay a gunman and point a mock weapon from a pulse nightclub, at an LGBTA event. Let them deal with the bad PR.
I would also like to add, before this gets too crazy. If you know who this is, don’t tag him. He’s a know quantity and he has done things like this for infamy before. Don’t give him the name recognition
I think the thing that’s wild to a bunch of people being like hurh hurh it’s just for fun bro. This shit isn’t allowed at pretty much any anime convention or comic con. Often prop weapons are required to be checked in inspected and clearly marked with BIG orange tags. Also this guy is a known POS
I wondered how it got in in the first place. I am now really glad i could not make it this year, and FWA will need to do a lot to get me to reconsider going in the future
Are you shitting me?! That flies right in the face of the rules they've had posted for over a decade! Don't care if it wasn't a real gun, it shouldn't have been approved. Mighty sus!
And that's when we call the cops. Brandishing a gun, even a fake one, but especially when you as the person being targeted can't tell, is super illegal.
i think even just dressing up in full tactical gear should probably not be allowed at cons. seeing someone dressed that way puts the majority of people around them on edge, understandably. doesn't matter if it's some character (most wouldn't know that)
it's unfortunate, but it's the world we live in
Allowing it bc cosplay is quite the workaround for excuse use.
Everything about this I’ve read so far screams being aware of their on purpose actions and toeing the line for next time.
Yeah the number of times I had to double take to check if someone was cosplaying or actual cop/security was way too fuckin high. This whole style of cosplay doesn't belong at a furry con.
If their attorneys/insurers find out about their “approval” they’ll become uninsurable. If people had panicked and someone got trampled they’d be liable. A great way to get sued out of existence.
"Prop guns are allowed as long as they do not look like a real weapon in any way...If it looks like a real gun or could easily be mistaken as a real gun at a distance, even with an orange tip, it’s not allowed."
Made the mistake of checking Xitter. Everyone there seems to agree with this ass because the comments you see are from people who paid to get boosted, and most people who pay are right-wing or Musk supporters. Millions more comments at the bottom disagree, but you won't see that. Fuck that place.
I repeat what I said earlier. Next time yell out that there's a gun, call the police, and make a bigger scene. Act like you truly believe it's a gun. We can't ignore that someone might actually use the "it's just cosplay" excuse.
Hi Brae, thanks for bringing this to the community’s attention, and I’m sorry to hear your valid concern got a blasé response from a staffer.
Have you reached out to conops@furryweekend.com? I’ll be submitting a complaint as well, and pressuring them to amend weapons and apparel policies.
Okay, cosplayer here. We did have someone at Phoenix Comic Con bring real weapons in and we almost had an active shooter situation. There's a reason why LARGE swaths of comic cons are banning prop firearms. And growing up in CO, I had so many active shooter drills, I'm not cool with this shit.
Well, they just put out a statement saying going forward, they’re going to have more clear policies on what exactly is and isn’t allowed when it comes to prop guns.
