I think it's more economics. Tomatoes should do well here in the hot sun, especially a little higher up. But they must survive trips to wholesalers and retailers and so I think survivability is the main thing. The peppers are horrid as well with tough, plastic-like skins.

No, I wouldn’t like peppers like that… probably my favourite vegetable. You are more than likely right about the economics of transporting the tomatoes. I know that spoilage is the big thing driving small greengrocers out of business in the uk. They just can’t absorb the losses.
