I think it's more economics. Tomatoes should do well here in the hot sun, especially a little higher up. But they must survive trips to wholesalers and retailers and so I think survivability is the main thing. The peppers are horrid as well with tough, plastic-like skins.

These are rather weak. I forget the cultivar name. Filipinos are weird. They will eat sinigang which is super sour tamarind based soup, but they don't like acidic tomatoes or sauce.🤷‍♂️
