To put it another way, the reason why AI isn't as opposed in Japan is because artists in Japan have the infrastructure and support they need to make sure they won't be made obsolete, at least those who don't work for exploitative media companies

Independent artists in Japan can sell merch and comics at just regular physical stores. Western stores aren't as willing to support that, especially when the work is NSFW, and consumers really see it as greedy for artists to restrict access to any of their work except as like an early Patreon perk

And none of this makes it okay to skirt by on paying Western artists anyways. Western artists can't easily switch over to the Japanese model. In Japan, selling Dojins is its own industry that mainstream companies aren't as hesitant to work with

This doesn't make it okay when anime studios replace their artists with AI. Unlike independent artists in Japan, professional animators rely on that work for income. They are willing to put up with abysmal working conditions and bad pay for it and don't deserve to be fucked over more than they have

Japanese artists do not rely on commissions and use them more as paid requests that they often turn down. They rely a lot more on sales of comics and sometimes individually pay walled art pieces. Western artists however do primarily rely on commissions

There's also a discussion to be had about why Japanese artists are comparatively more okay with generative AI than western artists, which is to say because the main source of income for the former cannot be replaced easily with AI, unlike the latter

It should also not be used to bypass paying artists for commissions in general. Use it as a placeholder for a roleplay site or something. Don't use it as though it's an image you earned and now own

No. Sure, there are some people who just hate generative AI in every way. Some like me think it has the potential to be useful and good. But it must be opposed for any commercial purpose, at least until companies stop trying to use it to replace real human artists

"Now who's a good bull."
It took some persuading, but eventually Alby would sit patiently as his Sir practiced shibari with the bull's body. It would be a shame to undo any of it now.

Honestly, the comic could have gone on for another half-decade at least, but I completely understand why Rick ended it. I'm glad he did because I do like his new output separately from how I liked Housepets

It also helped that Marion's hasty introduction was well integrated into his character and his motivations. He's one of the few characters that didn't choose to be part of the main story. He just needs to be in order to return to his status quo

The only time I felt like a character was introduced specifically for the purpose of being a new protagonist was Marion and that was the last main story arc before Heckraiser. But even that was integrated well and after the arc where he's introduced, he doesn't fully take over from there

Like King's role was massive for almost a decade, but when that ended, it didn't feel at all like Keene was hijacking the story when he took over, because his role, his motivations, and his arc were being built up for years to a point where him taking over just made sense

I'm pretty sure Marion and Grape have never met, yet both can be considered main characters. I'm not criticizing that. It makes it feel fleshed out that the story can be dozens of characters' own arcs and adventures that all contribute in their own ways for their own purposes
