I feel like Amazon becoming unusable as a place to just browse and buy stuff was a real canary in the coal mine glimpse into the future online

when I have to put more time and care into searching for some inexpensive part than I used to do on a deep specialized Google search (with dates and domains and boolean operators) I know it's gone off the rails with the fun bonus of maybe still getting low-quality junk even if you made no mistakes

My brother used to work for a company that did trademark enforcement and they had a whole team who just spent all day emailing Amazon and asking them to de-list fake products.

very unnerving benchmark observed yesterday when i searched a couple different names of military aircraft & instead of the toy & model kit results i'd get a year ago it's all a bunch of dubious book titles & bot-shops offering to screen-print said aircraft on tshirts

At this point I think it's better to just buy things in person. At least I know what I'm going to get.

Like 10 years ago I understood Amazon as existing because they had products that people paid money to have shipped to them, now I understand they exist because of 10 warlocks chanting in a cave as I scroll past 85 sponsored ads for unregulated Ramen until I reach the Buldak chicken

Hadn’t used it for years and had reason to buy something there recently and man, it is *so* hostile.

Especially the part where there's whole outlets that steal anything with a good design and make it their own with bigger financial backing and there's no recourse for the guy who got ripped off. That just became AI!

I wanted to buy a mini flashlight that clips to my glasses (needed more light for detail work) and every single listing was obviously a scam.

What made Amazon usable for me again was Fakespot browser extension - it's actually useful AI to grade listings by how fake the reviews are so you can filter stuff used by real people

Stopped using it several months ago when their third party delivery driver refused to stop because of the 'dangerous' driveway. It's not. The dude doesn't know how to back up the delivery truck. smh
