Describing Biden as “the lesser of two evils” willfully disregards how much greater the other evil is this time around.

He/him. Here for the low-anxiety alternative to Twitter. Horror, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy. And, grudgingly, a bit of freaking out about American politics.

I think it’s partly misapplied nostalgia—“He reminds me of the kind of presidents we used to have [in movies]—fused to blind terror and a desire for the familiar and a return to “normalcy”.

Almost makes one wonder what horrors were contained in previous drafts if THIS is the version he signed onto. I say “almost”, because—and I say this the decorum required when speaking of the Chief Justice—fuck that guy.

A Biden win isn’t a panacea. It’s the start of a long, hard, journey without any guarantees. But no plausible roads that lead *anywhere* we want to go begin with Trump being reelected.

Checking my list of Noteworthy Events Since the Last Ice Age, it looks to have survived the “Dean Scream” and the “Release of the Snyder Cut” as well. …Truly the wonders it has seen.

Hey, y’all—assuming we GET another election after this one, what say we maybe just once try nominating someone who ISN’T just the lesser of two evils? I only bring it up because a lot of today’s horror could’ve been avoided if we’d, you know, picked better candidates in any election this century.

It should instead motivate the shit out of anyone who wants to stave off the worst, for at least a while longer.

Yep. Biden made the same mistake in standing for reelection. I say “standing” because it doesn’t feel like an energetic enough campaign to call it “running”. So, once again, all we can do is hope there’s juuust enough juice left to stagger across the finish line before finally giving up the ghost.

To lose our capacity to be shocked (and motivated) by horrors is another step on the road to giving up hope they can be changed.

Yeah, this sort of shit falls into the category of “shocked but not surprised”. Like, yes, I’m not caught totally unawares but it’s still fucking awful and a blow to the remaining good in the world.

Definitely fun! Can imagine someone who believes in or even loves the Fae, but learns too too much and loses access to them, and then becomes desperate to get it back—and “unlearn” the destroying truth. Or what if one of the Fae learns the secret of their own mysteries? Do they die? Become mortal?

It feels like Snyder only later realized how badly he’d misjudged the character, the effects of which then rippled through the rest of the DCU films. From that one character choice, the entire “saga” was thrown onto a wildly different, darker, course.

I wonder if part of the problem is that we treat “literary” as a genre (or lack of genre, too often) rather than an axis. Both “Realistic” and “Genre” stories exist on a continuum of less to more thematic/narrative complexity—but SFF criticism tends to differentiate less well along that spectrum.

I’d have argued with this more strenuously a few years ago, but I’ve just come off a real run of mediocre-but-well-loved genre fiction. I’d counter that a lot of literary fiction is equally tropey and—while often more structurally more sophisticated—not necessarily more thematically complex.
