This is not a hard and fast rule, however. Samurai stories and movies in post-war Japan were often vehicles for the wounded national spirit of the nation. Kurosawa's samurai movies turned this notion on its head.

Been watching a lot of Japanese movies lately and a thing I've noticed is that there is political divide in the ideology of certain types of jidaigeki. Samurai movies are ferociously devoted to right-wing class ideals while ninja movies are rooted in left-wing political thought.
