Copyright law doesn't look so bad now that it might be the only thing standing between you and AI scraping all of your content.

A 1928 ad in an Italian immigrant newspaper reads
"[City's] only pizzeria for sale, located at [address.] Good business, go to the location," acc. to Google Translate.
Back then, could "pizzeria" have had a meaning/connotation other than "restaurant specializing in pizza?"

May not be as applicable other fields of inquiry but I figure most reference librarians will encounter someone who can deliver a long narrative that omits an actual ask. 👍

Librarian in my day job. One of my best reference interview questions is "What are you hoping to find today that you don't already know, so we don't cover the same ground?" Local history & genealogy researchers want to tell you everything they know & this helps them focus on what they don't know.

Archive.org seems to be experiencing high demand/low bandwidth at the moment. Hoping they are not under attack again.

If an institution wishes to dispose of itsrecords, and *can legally do so, * and a historical society wants to have them? Great!
But offering & accepting old stuff is entirely voluntary for both parties.

People are often surprised to learn that large institutions retain their own records: governments, courts, schools, colleges & universities, hospitals, corporations. Your local historical society is not a mandatory repository for everybody's old stuff.

Your annual reminder that the great state of New York abolished slavery on July 4, 1827 and the bicentennial is fast approaching. If you're not up to celebrating anything else tomorrow, celebrate this.

Did you know? Anyone may take out a JSTOR account and read 100 articles/month for free. You just can't download them as PDFs.

Possibly a long shot, but try FamilySearch.org. It's the free competitor to Ancestry but you do have to register for a free account to use it.

When it comes to library, museum & archival collections, there's no such thing as "putting everything online." We didn't microfilm everything 50 years ago when film was the cutting edge duplication technology, either.

Look for the Report An Issue link (IIRC). However, even if a book is PD, they cannot put the whole thing online if all they don't have a scan if it. They imported millions of records from WorldCat for books they have no scans of.

A cursory Google search yielded nothing, also tried some sheet music sites.

In the 1890s, a man in NY State sells his property to his wife for $1. I have my own theories about why he may have done so; let's hear yours. With citations if you have any, especially for period advice on estate planning. Thanks!
