Have you read any of their earlier work? if so, how does this one compare to the older books? (Trying to decide whether to go back to the earlier book I DNF or to try something newer.)

Jo Paoletti's book explores the change from pink being "too strong a color" for girls in the early 20th Century to the endless pinkification we have now.

#Genealogy
I correlate what I find in Ancesty's City Directories with MyHeritage's collection, with directories at FamilySearch, the Internet Archive, Google Books, and other digital collections to make sure I haven't missed a directory.

#Genealogy
It's more difficult than at Ancestry to see what directories are included in the collection.

Watch out for:
- bad OCR
- assumptions about marriages between people who may not be spouses
- directories which cover multiple towns. Check which section your person is in. /3

#Genealogy
MyHeritage aggregates results from multiple directories to show you quickly how long your person was listed in the directory at the same address. You can easily search for other people living at that address. Great tools but there are some pitfalls. /2

I saw an article recently that talked about the chemical changes that can happen when the tomatoes are over-chilled, but I can't the link. But there ought to be more foodie articles or even YouTube videos out there, for those who want to geek out or experiment.

I think it's long past the time that we call this behavior "stupid" or "incompetent". It is evil, hiding behind a cloak of stupidity and incompetence. Call it what it isβ€”brazen, doesn't give a fuck about the countryβ€”but they know exactly what they're doing. They don't care.

I don't know who needs to hear this right now, but: Please don't waste time picking fights w/ people who basically agree with you, and just differ on semantics. If today has reminded us of anything, it's that democracy is at stake. One side wants to end it. One side doesn't.

I did learn some things about the history of Germanic languages, but it was a long time ago. I came to linguistics after doing Classical Studies, so if you want to talk Ancient Greek dialectology or you want to talk about Homer, that's me.

I can't give you a good description of how the over-refrigerated tomatoes taste to me. Sometimes if you let them come back up to room temperature again, they're okay, but sometimes they're just nasty.

Well, it's complicated.

This article claims that high-quality tomatoes can take being in the fridge if they're already ripe.

If the tomato is low-quality, the refrigerator can make the texture more mealy.

Understood! To my ear, even though "Throw the cow over the fence some hay now" would sound funny and wrong, the "now" at the end is easy to parse. That's an exasperated parent: "I told you to do this already and you still haven't done it, get cracking."

You can just see the Warner Bros. cartoon with the pundit intoning "Masks don't work" and then the flu viruses pop up in the next frame and yell "HEY! HEY NOW! What are we, chopped liver?"

Series books were "problems" long before ASOIAF. When I was still working at a bookstore, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser (Fritz Leiber) got reprinted with new covers, I think three times? But the publisher stopped with book five each time because the sales numbers fall off as a series goes along.

"Throw the cow over the fence some hay now" is still parse-able if you treat it like you would "throw the stallion in the south paddock some hay now", where the "over the fence" is a locative for the animal.

There’s not a lot of official messaging lately but we all know what to do by now. If not getting sick is important to you, masks (especially good ones, and especially in crowded/poorly ventilated spaces) are helpful, testing before gatherings is helpful, being up to date on vaccines is helpful.

Honestly, everyone needs to read this article, because it is well past time people recognise how airborne pathogens spread, and how they can be effectively reduced. It's not just masks and vaccines, it's sick leave and infrastructure, goddammit.

Before COVID lockdown, there was some kind of crud going around for the last couple of winters before. It eventually settled in your upper chest and left you with a hacking cough for a month or more. I did not get that crud during COVID lockdown and I did not miss getting it one bit.

We apparently wiped out a strain of flu while mandatory masking for COVID was in effect.

I don't get the "oh it's just a cold" argument.

My neighbors don't want my cold either. I'll keep masking, thanks.

Retired bookstore employee here, and my niece is a grocery store worker. I hear you! What do people do when they are sent home from work because they are sick? They stop off somewhere on the way home for food and/or books! So retail workers get exposed to everything.

It was fun to be a library aide in a library where the head librarian had a sense of humor, and in an era where people believed in having books in the library so kids could learn about stuff.

After JAWS came out, our head librarian told me all the books about sharks vanished from our high school library. She showed me a book about fishing & said "There's a chapter on shark fishing! I'm going to make a subject card for the catalog and see how long it takes for this one to disappear."

Revisiting this topic of why I don't like book challenge posts. Point zero: So many people are posting covers only without alt-text. They usually don't mention the title or author in the post, so the whole exercise is inaccessible to people using screen readers.

I'm not bothered as much by the texture of tomatoes as some people, but I do prefer cherry tomatoes to the bigger varieties. Except when the taste has been ruined beause someone put them in the refrigerator.

Which potatoes, though? Because there are so many more varieties than most of us know about. If you hate them all, I don't have a problem with that. My food motto about different tastes is "leaves more for me" and I'll happily trade you something else for your share.
