2018 also seems like a strange time to make this your main argument. i understand that frank has a deep respect for the 19th century populist movement, and it rankled to see "populism" be impugned as it has been.

i like thomas frank, but i'm reading /The People, No/ and 2020 seems like an odd time to publish a whole book identifying anti-populists as the real danger

as it takes a more populist turn, the republicans party would seem to riven by enormous internal contradictions. are things like reigning in corporate power wedge issues? and if not, why not?

Thinking (semi-regular thought!) about conceptions of distance between the US and the UK, so copying over a thread from the bad place. Not as in the "100 miles is a long way, 100 years is a long time" bit, but more how land is divided. In the UK, you can never be more than 70m/113km from the Sea.

On a 18-24 vote, City Council rejects a resolution that would have allowed them to consult with their own LRB lawyers on the floor during deliberations. At least a temporary victory for the Johnson administration, which worked hard to stop this move towards more independence.

Item up in Rules Committee right now would allow City Council's legal staffers (LRB) to be on the floor and give advice on parliamentary and legal questions during council meetings. Mayor's office supposedly worked the phones against it, and sent Law Dept. to testify against.

We're very saddened to hear about the passing of Jane McAlevey, a true legend in labor organizing. May her memory be a blessing. Her lessons certainly are.

i’m not disagreeing that people facing the labor market without formal authorization face difficulties and risks. i do disagree that fact forced democratic governors and mayors to adopt very bad politics and policies. one measure of that is that in some places policies got better!

a high proportion of asylum seekers have crossed that bar. and it’s what chicago now expects asylum seekers to do, as it is not possible for new arrivals to get a work permit within 60 days, but the city only allows people to stay in city shelters for 60 days.

there are significant restriction about how and when refugees and asylum seekers can get work permits, but work permits have never been a bar to participating in the robust, informal economies of american cities.
