Around 1870, these lovely glass bottles started being sold for a very specific purpose. These are GLASS FIRE EXTINGUISHER GRENADES. The first generation were filled with saltwater, or ammonium chloride which, when it decomposes, produces gases that inhibit fire. (📷: Antique Bottle Depot)

Later, they contained *carbon tetrachloride* which when heated produces Phosgene and Hydrogen Chloride gas, which are fire-inhibitors, but also deadly to humans trapped in the fumes! They could be hand-held missiles, kept in a convenient carrying case... (📷: 1stdibs.com)

These are lovely. It's amazing to think about how much genuine craft and artistry went into this practical, real implements just as matter of course. These were mundane, disposable items. Today, our mundane items are disposable plastic shit with little real craft or care.
