"Satellites burn up at the end of service life during reentry, generating aluminum oxides as the main byproduct. These are known catalysts for chlorine activation that depletes ozone in the stratosphere."
As more satellites enter orbit, especially some of the newer constellation-based arrays (Starlink), the potential for ozone depletion by de-orbiting satellites will increase.
With currently planned missions we'll go from 17 tons/yr to 360 tons/yr of aluminum entering the atmosphere.
