Well luckily, if you’ve got splitting hairs, you just need to call up Jandeleine 😂 Pure FOMO, afaicr, existed only in the “buy a butterfinger, get the chocolate mount” promos, sure (and a friend got me that mount bc I was worried about my teeth at the time haha)

- three episodes of Project ARMS from a dvd at a dollar store (which I’ve watched a billion times but never been able to find the full series). Of course, I only got to catch episodes for awhile, bc we only had satellite a couple years; most my childhood was 4 channels on a big antenna haha

Please note I’m not trying to bag on enjoyment of those games, as I played both FFXIV and Destiny. More that I keep seeing people be kinda dickish towards people who find enjoyment in some F2P games, and find it unfair since I rarely see someone get mocked for subbing to a game w/a cash shop.

Well, that’s why I included the other elements. No loot box I can recall from my years in Eorzea, obvi. Broader point was cost to play, when some F2P and gacha games don’t charge for story but games that have stacking costs also include FOMO cash items or lock color palettes behind transactions.

Yes but paying for cosmetics is a recurring criticism of many, many games, even if there are plenty of in-game cosmetics obtainable without extra charges. And tbc, I’m not bashing FFXIV as a game itself; loved almost all of it (haven’t picked up latest bc of personal issues unrelated to game)

The majority of gacha games are trash, for sure. And even for ones that aren’t, the gacha mechanic is still obviously a money grab that preys on people in different ways. I’m not in anyway trying to downplay that.

Those rarely seem to get the same attention when gambling/gacha comes up, even though they’re far more insidious; the new cards often redefine the meta, and F2Pers who are unlucky in the pity prizes basically serve as ants under the boots of paying players.

That’s of course not including people paying exorbitant prices for cosmetics and loot boxes. Which brings me to trading card games like Magic: The Gathering - Arena, and Marvel Snap!. TCG by default is gacha, and both have FOMO passes that give major advantages over F2P players.

BUT You also had to pay to get access to the two dungeons included in an expansion. And they raised the annual pass price after I’d left.

And I say “required annual pass” because buying an expansion didn’t give you all the content for that expansion. The expansion would give you just the main campaign. A couple included the first “season” of that year. You had to buy a pass for the other 3 seasons and their activities.

Not to mention, the story and experience I’ve gotten in Genshin for free has been exhilarating, while I tapped out of Destiny after $60 for the Destiny 1 complete collection, and between $50-$100 each for every D2 expansion from Forsaken to Beyond Light (3 total) and their required “annual pass”.

Also, not all gacha are created equally. I’ve played genshin for almost a year, only recently getting to the latest content. By comparison, I completed Destiny 1 w/all expansions in less than a week, and could likely do same with D2.

There are legit criticisms of gacha games. But FOMO, overcharging, and gacha elements in beloved games rarely get the same level of criticism. FFXIV, for example: - min. $10/mo - min. $40/expansion - $12-37 mounts - $1-8 dyes - $10 to change gender - $12 emotes - $25 to skip the story

Tho I’m probably not weeb-y enough: The only Ghibli film I can recall watching is Mononoke when I was a kid, I’ve never watched all of DBZ (prefer Abridged), and two of my fav anime were produced by Netflix.

I get and appreciate that the classics had sizeable influence on many people making our favorite shows today. But I struggled to finish Akira, and BeBop is kinda boring tbh. Even TriGun—which I love!—is a chore at points. (And I’ve watched BLAME! at least five times.)

I beat the game and mostly understood the message behind Metal Gear Solid when I was 10. Even did a report on it in 5th grade! Pretty similar, I’d say.
