Might as well join the Dominic Cummings New Party (if that ever exists).

Why would anyone of distinction (even PPS level) want to defect and put themselves under the rule of a complete amateur who doesn't yet have a functional movement with activist base but will insist on having the last word about policy and presentation?

This is so cool! Frog & amphibian have been dessimated by the disease chytridiomycosis, caused by a fungal pathogen. Researchers have realised that the fungi is heat intolerant so little brick saunas for frogs can help kill the fungi! Recovered frogs more resistant to further infxn 🧪

The Galaxy Brain move is to put Liz Truss in charge of something with explicit instructions to fuck it up. She will then fail at the mission, paradoxically by making things better.

Socialist Labour Party still exists, though it never got mentioned during the brief time Corbyn fans were wondering out having their own breakaway from the Starmer Party.

Issues of political geneology: the current "SDP" has no link to the old one since the old one was officially defuncted c.1990 and Owen endorsed the Tories. The current Liberal Party might have a reasonable claim to be continuous with the grand old Liberal Party that declined 100 years ago.

Fun fact: if you check the full list of every party designation entered in 2024, there is still a "Liberal Party" running independently of the Liberal Democrats, that got a few thousand votes. I think they were the anti-merger Liberals who stayed apart in 1988 and never gave up, unlike D.Owen.

The real lesson is that the old Liberal Party's decline in the 1929 election could have been avoided if Lloyd George had done more wacky water-based stunts.

As a female chancellor she only controls older banknotes that still have the Queen on the back. The new ones with Charles have to be handled by a male Treasury minister.

Daring move by Starmer to appoint some ministers from outside Parliament, but I wouldn't have given DEFRA to Timmy Mallett.

I like the idea that Reform is actually the Met in a 70s G.F.Newman drama - Nigel is the hopelessly naive liberal Chief Constable, while all the old school rosters are taking bungs and fitting up old lags.

My entire intellectual life is trying to understand things I heard references to in 1977-83, most of which turned out to be dull and inconsequential. I'm very bitter about that OU broadcast about the history of political thought.

For an infant, the most confusing part of Newsround reporting on the end game of the Rhodesian War was the idea the country was controlled by a cabinet. I really did think it meant a fancy drinks cabinet, the sort you see posh people chatting next to in 70s smart TV drama.

How bitterly the Americans must envy the British system for dealing with incapable leaders, by getting them to call and lose early elections.

This is Reform's moment, but it will only be a moment. In 1983 the Alliance (as was) got 25% and only 23 seats. Ecology Party (as was) got 1 million votes and no seats. So they carried on working for decades. Reform haven't got a movement, they're a business with a celebrity CEO and not much else.

How many councils are Reform in charge of? Now that the fireworks are over, how many activists will they mobilize to keep those 4 muppets in their little Westminster niche? They all get sick of each other, making less actual difference to anything than the Greens or LDs.
