I’ve been in one ~2 years, focused on gamification ($) of energy use reductions at specific short timeframes. I like alerts about high demand times. But the individual use reduction scale means it’s less rewarding for people who are already strong on conservation all the time vs heavy users.

No!! What do you even do in that situation?! We get swarms of Argentine ants, they go to all my water sources — every faucet, toilet, etc. I can’t imagine what I’d do if they were fire ants. Maybe just move or burn the place down 😭

Ha, this reminds me of walking down to bumpass hell with someone I didn’t know. I knew from the past that people underestimate how hot + steep it can be climbing back up. I kept asking them to bring more than a 12-oz water bottle, they said no … and then, yup, you guessed it, they asked for mine 🤦♂️

When I read stuff like that I usually assume the writer didn’t understand the information at all and just copy/pasted the language, or wrote what they thought someone said to them. But the Herculean phrasing is particularly odd.

I read this to say that NIH is removing covid-19 treatment guidelines from their web site? Including the most recent updates that won't even be 6 months old when the site is taken down? Why would they completely remove it, is that standard NIH practice?

🧪⚒️ The Wandan mud volcano in southern Taiwan erupted again at ~11am on the 6th July. Four vents erupted. This is the 9th eruption of Wandan in the last 2 years. No damages are reported. Photos courtesy of my friend 張寶惠, the mud volcano temple caretaker. I’ll post the videos on other socials.

Is it an OSHA thing they’re trying not to deal with? I was leading field work where we were facing smoke issues and when I asked safety folks about guidelines, they were a bit weird about it. My personal conclusion was there were concerns about triggering rules for training & fit testing.

🤣 I actually prefer salt creek, which I think is technically Niland. But it’s not always open, so Mecca beach is my fallback. I might have stayed in an actual hotel in brawley during a multi-day sandstorm once. And even went to a movie, the weather was too bad to be outside. Felt so fancy!

Whenever I say I’m going to Mecca for vacation, almost no one in the SF Bay Area knows where I’m talking about and they think I am saying “mecca”. (Mecca Beach is one of the main Salton Sea SRA campgrounds) Maybe I should mail my postcards from here instead of the nearby metropolis of Calipatria.

I’m sitting here debating complaining to my landlord that other tenants are setting off fireworks, including what sounds like m80s or something similar. And, thing is, they knew it was a problem — when I walked to the corner the dad stopped their kid and they ran inside. 🤦♂️

I haven’t tried blue deck! Bluesky has an official app, which is what I use 90% of the time. Very similar to earlier versions of 🐦 mobile app. Easy to post photos with it (but no video yet 😕). ~easy to move between feeds I pin if there are only a few, too many clicks to view other feeds I follow.

I think how people post has a strong impact on this, though. On the science feeds I check ~daily, people intentionally posting to them seem to post mostly close-ended comments, vs asking a question or trying to engage in conversation. And I’m learning to dislike the keyword ones, too random.

Catching some after-dark cool breezes along the Berkeley shoreline. One of the highest tides of the year. I’m pretty sure that’s wildfire smoke along the horizon, maybe from up in Oroville? (based on smoke maps) And, huge fireworks display up in Richmond! Can’t believe any city is doing that.

I can’t even begin to estimate how many coots I’ve seen, so very many. But last month was the first time I saw a coot as young as the little one in this photo — and wow, some birds go through very awkward phases, just look at that head 😁
