"You can't think about Rudolf Höss without thinking about three things: history, ideology, and psychology." /The Zone of Interest/ renounces all three."

While I was blown away when I saw the movie, I think this essay is right.

I learned from the erstwhile bird-themed short-form blogging platform: I don't need to comment on everything! Probably not on most things! Especially not the polarizing, headline-generating topics du jour. I'm trying to bring that energy here. That said: I agree that Biden should step aside.

I wrote about my recent experience working with HathiTrust data to try to categorize about 1,000 three-volume, Victorian novels. There's mystery, intrigue, and some odd visualizations.

AI detectors are unreliable, but after reading 30 student essays co-generated (on purpose) by ChatGPT, I can confidently advise you to flag anything that includes "grapple," "delve," "intertwined," "intricate," "ever-evolving," and--its apparent favorite word--"tapestry."

This is going to be very hard for algorithmic search to defeat. If there was a search engine that only indexed whitelisted, human approved sites I would definitely give it a go. I already tend to add the name of a trusted source to most Google searches (ie "cooperative extension" for garden stuff)

In recent years, I've assigned Jacqueline Rose on the Oscar Pistorius trial, as a text that shows a psychoanalytic critic working in ways that feel compelling, and accessible.

Any suggestions for similarly short, accessible, psychoanalytically inspired/adjacent text?

Until I relented & poached an invite to see what all the fuss was about, I imagined this place must simply be better than Mastodon. And it is nice here; it's lovely to see you all (many of you for a second time!). But I prefer many elements of Mastodon's affordances & interface. (Bookmarks!)

This might be flying under the radar (so please RT!), but the US Copyright Office is soliciting comments for its decisions on training ML/NLP/AI systems on copyrighted material (even *non*-generative AI). They need to hear from researchers, so please comment! Deadline Oct 30. www.copyright.gov/ai/

Very much share your feelings about MUST WE MEAN. I was reading the HAMLET essay in DISOWNING KNOWLEDGE, and it was… less compelling. (Though I was heartened to learn of an entire debate about the dumb show in the play within the play, which has always puzzled me. )

(Apologies for butting in) Textual signs though aren't indexical---or (here's the provocation) haven't been. The suggestion that LLMs represent a sort of indexical trace is one I find provocative. I've tried to imagine the model as a sort of casting taken from its training data.

OK, I've been holding off writing about the new IPEDS numbers for college majors because I'm having trouble believing some of what they're saying: specifically, that national degrees dropped 2.5% in 2022 after rising 1.4% in 2021. Is this really true? That would mean that seniors and juniors when…

For the first time, I actually asked ChatGPT for help with something this week: two emacs regex. While one of the two needed some tweaking, it saved me drudgery that otherwise I would have simply endured.

I really want Mastodon to be post-Twitter solution, and so I'm staying there too. But I've recognized, poking around here for the last week, that more folks are more active here. Its hard to argue with network effects. Even though I *really* want to.

My first twitter post was: 1. The world is that which is the case. (The opening of Wittgenstein's TRACTATUS.) I knew no one and probably no one saw it. More than a decade later, another jokey allusion, chastened by a decade of social media. (It's WALDEN, by way of Cavell, so not really so far.)

The attack on libraries will not end with any consensus standard for what counts as prurient or pornographic, because the attack isn’t about that. It’s about eliminating the library as a public space where a child can find the smallest measure of freedom from parental domination. 📚
