Very much share your feelings about MUST WE MEAN. I was reading the HAMLET essay in DISOWNING KNOWLEDGE, and it was… less compelling. (Though I was heartened to learn of an entire debate about the dumb show in the play within the play, which has always puzzled me. )

Textual signs though aren't indexical---or (here's the provocation) haven't been. The suggestion that LLMs represent a sort of indexical trace is one I find provocative. I've tried to imagine the model as a sort of casting taken from its training data.

The attack on libraries will not end with any consensus standard for what counts as prurient or pornographic, because the attack isn’t about that. It’s about eliminating the library as a public space where a child can find the smallest measure of freedom from parental domination. 📚
