If it was about keeping the Red Wall Leavers on board he could just throw out a few platitudes. Saying categorically no rejoin, no CU, no SM, “in my lifetime” is too strong to row back.

We aren’t going to rejoin in a long long time , there’s no mandate for it nor wish to go through the arguments again even if sensible people know Brexit was a mistake and that’s both with uk politicians and within the EU
