I've experienced this discussion both in pub and fan fiction spaces and it makes ppl defensive not receptive, even when they do like reading and writing lesbian and trans fiction. Calling ppl's reading habits "bad" doesn't make anyone want to read.

There's a very Puritan aspect of it-- if you are doing it for any sort of "selfish" reason, the charity somehow just doesn't count. Coming from a Jewish background where giving tzedakah (charitable donations) is a mitzvah-- not just a good deed but a commanded one-- it makes so little sense.
