My latest newsletter is about how to put a stop to all the review-bombing on Goodreads. Those fake one-star reviews hurt marginalized authors disproportionately and they shouldn't hold so much power. Plus I explain why I like Goodreads and why I find it so useful.
I like the thumbs up or down idea a whole lot. I rarely talk about books I don't like -- unless there's something REALLY needing unpacking -- and a thumbs up captures a wide range of like to love... It's what Netflix uses, right? Starring is to... eh... one person's 3 star might be 2 to someone else
If I give a book a rating on Goodreads nowadays it’s almost always 3+ stars bc I’m practicing not forcing myself to finish books I don’t like. If I put books I don’t finish on Goodreads, I shelf them DNF, w/no star rating, but maybe a note about the type of reader who might like it.
Great latest newsletter. Personally I kinda like the rating system of Goodreads, but I wish they replaced the stars with what the star alt text say. It is how I have been using them. Mouse over when creating reveals: did not like it / it was ok / liked it / really liked it / it was amazing.
This is such a good article.
The point is, I think, that the current system mixes up what I personally feel about one product (I don't like it: please, algorithm, don't pull up any of this anymore) and what I *think* about it (algorithm, this might be good, but it just isn't for me).
That was an excellent article with multiple well-thought out solutions. In the beer industry we have a similar problem with Untappd, where breweries get an aggregate rating but people only rate lagers on a 2-3.5 scale and pastry stouts on a 3.5-5 scale.
I temped at a place that did 360 reviews for workplaces, where everyone reviewed everyone else. What I learned was that there is far more consistency in the ratings people gave than in the ratings they got.
You need to know someone’s average rating to know if they really liked something.
That's a wonderfully detailed, thoughtful article. Thank you.
Also, Vida fucking rocks and more people should watch it. Tanya Saracho definitely needs more producers to give her money to show us more great stories.
I rarely do reviews on Goodreads and don't star books unless I really loved them and want everyone to know. Meanwhile, my metamour rates all her books and will occasionally go in and rebalance the stars so that there is a normal distribution among all the books she's read
