Man, if it turns out that the right winger telling NY Times readers that they should follow his example and not vote did in fact vote in the last two elections, the Times should add this to the piece. Better than a retraction, since it illustrates a willful hypocrisy.

And even if a judge orders you to be released, under what mechanism is that enforced? Why would Trump listen to a court order he disagrees with?

Yep. If Biden wins there’s a couple of Justices that will cling to life with every bit of hate in their hearts hoping they can make it to 2028.

I’m wondering that if the 2016 voters who couldn’t tell the difference between Clinton and Trump have figured it out yet.

Going public with an experience like this is life-altering for a woman, so when you read these stories remember both the extraordinary amount of courage involved and also the likelihood that there are many others you’ll never hear.

Now do Trump, who also meandered, is a convicted felon, an adjudicated rapist and is on trial for mishandling of secret documents.

I don’t see a lot of pundits wanting to take the time and effort to do a real analysis. It’s far easier to offer opinion like its fact and remain comfortable on the side lines. I’m sure many of them feel safe regardless of who wins.

Sure, the NY Times can ask Biden to step down, but it's awfully weird they aren't asking Trump to stop running or Republicans to get a new candidate. Sure, both are old men, but only one has a criminal record, is an adjudicated rapist, and owes how much in fines?

CEOs who say they want regulatory stability and the rule of law seem weirdly open to the instability and personalism of an authoritarian regime. Important read:

I’m constantly amazed that these are the people we are told to look up to. Because they have been hired to run a big company doesn’t mean they are smart about other things. And, in fact, if they don’t think he won’t try again, they are, at best, naive…

I've been getting a lot of spam the past few days from "Substack" saying my email my as been "updated." None of it is from Substack, even though they are using images from Substack. So, obviously, don't click on the links.

One of the reasons I believe AI won’t replace artists, from Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act: “The personal is what makes art matter. Our point of view, not our drawing skills or musical virtuosity or ability to tell a story.” An AI is made up of an average of information. It will never have a POV.

Just saw this yesterday. It’s an intriguing set of ideas. I find the argument about streaming music devaluing our experience of music particularly compelling. I recently got my first turn table in decades and having a finite experience with music rather than an infinite one feels invigorating.

I'm just a simple country political scientist but I'm pretty sure if any other major presidential candidate said this it'd be covered none stop for weeks and everyone would agree that their campaign was over

Giving a cop the mugshot treatment because he arrested a rich person who was guilty and acting like that’s totally normal should be a moment that open’s people’s eyes to the jig.

If you didn’t see it in the movie theater, you might not see it again for years until it was on a network that added commercials and cut scenes for time. Unless you had a friend that had HBO.

Last time my son and I had it, we didn’t start testing positive until we started feeling better. We just assumed (correctly) we had COVID and not something else.

Same for those with MD after their name. Or Representative or Senator before their name. As I've gotten older, I'm realizing that no matter your age, you could still be stupid. My younger self would be shocked to discover that age does not grant wisdom and smarts.

Starbucks has added plastic to its paper cups to make them even more single-use, so you can't recycle or compost them. They also added a horrifying little graphic of a discarded cup murdering a sea turtle. I feel so awful for the graphic designer who had to make this We Proudly Serve DEATH

I think that’s the very thing that might prevent trump from selecting him. No way he wants someone taking his spotlight.

If your goal is to write for 5 minutes, you'll probably end up writing for more. If your goal is to write a sentence, you'll probably end up writing more. So, think about what's the smallest step you can take to start. And it can be whatever you want it to be, this is your journey, your story 2/2

Not silly! Rather than looking at how MUCH you have to write, ask what is the smallest step you could take to start? Maybe you just write the opening sentence and call it a day. Maybe the opening paragraph. Or, just 5 minutes... Starting is harder than continuing... 1/2

Maybe it’s the same thing, but a business credit card as well. This way, if and when, you travel for business, like a conference, that is also tracked.

How many people are there in this family?! How many gallons a week is a person drinking? Have they considered water? Sure, there’s inflation, but jeez, take some responsibility on your own life choices.

It all falls apart when it relies on “ethical” judges who take their oaths “seriously.” Who determines who is ethical or not? Serious or not. There’s plenty of people who think Alito is “ethical” and “serious.”

And there were more diverse offerings in the movie theater in the past. For all the blockbusters, there were still movies aimed at other people. The all in on the 200 million dollar blockbuster aimed at everyone in the long term was a mistake.

Great piece. And I think you’re right. The motive of the studios has always been about profit — and there were always franchises — but those in charge loved movies. Now, I don’t think those in charge do.
