Good morning #Chemsky, I admit I turned off my early alarm for some extra time in bed this morning after a long conference day yesterday. I think Frances Arnold deserves a lie in more after being part of a panel on science policy, giving a plenary, and then doing an event with David MacMillan.

Again I haven’t read it: 1. How much lead? 2. Is it from the cotton or from the processing? If it’s in the cotton it’s also in your shirt, undies, towels, blah blah 3. Is it biologically available/will it actually leech into your vag? Anyways

I haven’t read the lead in tampons study but: 1. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry is INCREDIBLY sensitive, like ppb sensitive 2. Microwave acid digestion is gonna dissolve everything 3. Lead is just kind of *around* and exists in a lot of plant products because they grow in dirt

Re Gorsuch and the nitrous, true story: On a phys org exam in my first year of grad school, Bergman gave some sort of MO question about nitrous oxide and a bunch of us thought it was NO, and Bob went Kingsfield-on-the-Paper-Chase like “One day you’ll leave here and want to call yourselves chemists!”

This is really concerning. However, I think I would have done the sample prep differently to understand the actual potential for leaching. Hopefully "microwave acid digestion" isn't representative of what's happening in situ 😵‍💫

Science folks, one thing about bluesky is there's way less 2 way interaction between people, especially on science posts, than there was on old Twitter. I'm not sure why that is, but it's something I'm keen to encourage. I'd love to hear your thoughts 🧪

Last night's dream was full of action and adventure (espionage! Betrayal! Mind control!). It even featured multiple points of view. But it ended with the villain forcing me to acquire UV spectra of multiple samples under terrible conditions (contaminated solvent! No gloves!). Horrifying. #Chemsky 🧪
