Though I panicked out of trying one at AO, I can assure you that you want to go silicone mask in light of the issues of bulk. The inherent danger of breathing and required supervision is 100% another factor, especially if you want the most bang for your buck.

I seem to recall that there’s a correlation to the size of a fandom and the ratio of loud bad actors to quiet majority from my tumblr days. It’s entirely possible furry could be entering the phase where the number of non-dicks with motivation outweigh the dicks, especially as furries gets older.

Secondly: while I understand your pessimism, I personally don’t find it productive in the “solutions seeking” phase of discussion. Its place is in critiquing the execution of ideas to ensure the ideal is ready to handle pressure against it, imo. Furry is huge and getting bigger. It has to evolve.

Any body of functionality needs to have a checks and balances system to ensure the types of people who do shit like you described to Ruweg gets held accountable. Which takes work. Again, Pride events feel like a great place to look toward for structure to model after.

Put another way: Big cons are like going to the Vegas strip to gamble in all the casinos or a cruise trip. Small local cons are like a farmer’s market open once a month or week. Can be just as if not more fun, but different.

Way I see it: Large cons are a major destination event for people all over to come to, as an easy reason for a vacation/trip. Small local cons are an event for the weekend for people to hang out and indulge and mingle with each other. It’s less threatening for newer folks to try out.

Both are equally important, but much like governments have a stewardship to maintain a middle class and eliminate wealth gaps, we as a community should do the same with smaller conventions. It also can safeguard against corporatization, as diversifying conventions prevents monolithic takeovers.

If the issue is furry growing so large that large conventions can’t keep up and will eventually cap, which causes issues in class segregation (which has a usual tendency to split across racial and gender lines!), then we need to use the size to create more spaces. Grow out, not up.

Having places where less-financially-privileged furs can mingle and have fun, even if such events are even more of a financial strain that big conventions are, would attempt to alleviate the classism and ageism. Potential partnering with pride groups also seems appropriate, given the overlap.

Similarly, it would create locations and events for people to go to create real-world communities of friends and support groups - connectivity between people and thus improving personal and professional relationships. I’m no social scientist or corporate person, but that’s my first thought.

I wonder if part of this can be partially mitigated with a coordinated effort of the larger conventions to partner with smaller ones, creating more local conventions though the states. AnthrOhio is one of the cheapest cons I can go to because of its proximity.
