The crazy thing is that the legal legislative support team who crafted the language of the bill, the sponsors, and the legislators who voted the bill are still around. The originalists could literally ask them what they meant.

In law school in NZ, my stat interp prof told the story of a judge elevated to the appeals court, which was interpreting a decision he had made as a judge. He piped up with, "This is what I actually meant." The other appellate justices said, "No you didn't."
