Wrote about Naoko Yamada's new film The Colors Within / Kimi no Iro. Its beauty inside and out, the careful depiction of its themes of acceptance, and the always amazingly wide selection of influences for a director who nonetheless makes movies that are easy to watch - this one chief amongst them!

In the same episode 12 of S1, Midori states: "you reached for the moon, Kumiko!". As Reina asks to practice with her (worried she won't pass the audition), they are also framed by the endless night sky. The struggles to get better never stop: will we get another bridge scene in the next episode?

The butterfly motif already appears in season 1 episode 12: As Kumiko practices, the butterfly flies happily over a field of flowers. It is then trapped into a web as Taki asks Asuka to play a part alone, signifying to Kumiko and the rest of the club that she isn't good enough for the competition.

Kumiko hides behind Kitauji's ideals of meritocracy ("I want to play if I can"/"I want the best player to win"), and Mayu's denies wanting to play the soli to preserve the group's harmony and be liked, despite working hard on it every day, even in the bus:

We also see two ways people deal with rivalry in this episode: Mayu and Kumiko both refuse to admit they want to play the soli and be the best player for themselves, creating friction. Satsuki and Suzume on the other hand openly admit their rivalry and grow from it, becoming friends:

This episode and this season in general is very centered around themes of denial and expectations: Kumiko feels the warning signs but can't bring herself to acknowledge them properly, whereas Mayu, Reina, and even Tsukamoto know what's going to happen (for the soli and for the tubas):

Everyone has a unique fashion sense and clothes to go with it, everyone has a specific trait and height, everyone walks differently and they all interact with specific friend groups, we see people from other schools, details like the Rikka twins being differentiated by a mole are included...

By the way the more the shows goes on and introduces new characters, just passing by, playing instruments, interacting with families, the more I'm shocked at how much work the chara designs must have taken - especially since so many previous characters left after graduation.

I love how they keep showing how Kumiko is guarded and distant with almost everyone in the club because she's president and has responsabilities as a manager, then contrast it with a scene where she freely talks to Reina and even jokes around. And it's the same for Reina - from drum major to bestie.

It's interesting that although she genuinely wants everyone to be happy, she constantly and unwillingly insults Kumiko and Kanade by saying she should drop out as to not take their spot in an audition. She does think she's a better player than them. Kumiko can't reply but Kanade certainly does:
