I always like how accountability is a slippery noodle that is just around yet ANOTHER corner. Impeached for Jan 6th? No, proper venue is criminal court. Prosecuted in Criminal court? Oops, the president should be immune from that; impeachment is the right venue. Just not HERE and NOW, okay?

The cute thing is that they think if the J6ers would have found Mike Pence they would have had a stern talking to him, and then would have felt better; and not after doing harm there, they wouldn't have marched over to the court and upended that too.

I've had weird issues with keyboards in the past; one "good"** technique is to find a text file that has the letter, copy it and paste it in when you need it. **Not recommended for anything other than emergency use; usually you can scrounge a keyboard and just plug it in.

You need it to surf and for some e-mail? The computer you already have does that perfectly. The kiddies will be playing games, and if you buying a shiny new computer THAT is the one that they'll want to use, since it'll run more games. So, why not just give it to them and keep the other one?

I used to work at a computer-related nonprofit and I'd get questions because "the kids" were now starting to use the computer more and more. People were shocked when I suggested buying the KIDS a new computer, and making the OLDER one adult exclusive. 1/2

Dumb Q - Do these news sites have some setting or request in to places like the Wayback machine that they aren't archived? People should have offline copies of their work 100%, but I've seen some news sites go offline and wondered if there isn't at least a partial archive somewhere.

Dude on twit: I'm looking for a developer. I am willing to pay $100K per year. (Several posts later...): I gave two short projects to both of them, 2 hours of work. But yeah, I won't pay them for that. Don't do this. If you have a budget to hire people for $100K, pay them for "short project work"!

Mays was before my baseball watching time, but seeing and hearing talk about him over the years has been just amazing. He was a kind and giving soul, and really should be the role model that all athletes aspire to -- good both on and off the field. A true loss.

Is this an example of the savior complex? 100%. One group of academics made (bad) assumptions with good intentions, and the result fell far short. Everyone's time and a bunch of money was wasted, but on paper it looked good. 8/8

I don't think the UK academics had ill intentions, but without engaging and understanding the needs on African side, the project was doomed to fail. Picking a priority project as identified by the African academics would have been more impactful. 7/

So, without understanding the need, the UK people put a package together. But the package didn't include training or ongoing support/engagement, so the academics in Africa were hesitant or unable to use it. So, it sat mostly unused. 6/

It turns out the UK academics had minimal contact with their African counterparts, and hadn't really built institutional support there. Some African universities struggle for basics, so they are hesitant to refuse generous donations, even if they aren't a core need. 5/

The cause was noble -- the UK university enlisted the help of a vendor for a software program that was widely used in the UK. They got it at a reduced rate, and bought computers to run it on, and sent it on to the University in Africa without any charge. GREAT, RIGHT? 3/

I decided to look into international projects between Universities in the first world and the third world, and started researching. I found a paper that talked about how a UK university had tried to help one in Africa, and why the impact was far less than anyone hoped. 2/

Obscure fact: Network stuff is measured in bits because different protocols have different overheads. One byte (8 bits) can be 10+ bits on the line. They do refer to "approx byte values" as Octets, but again one octet isn't one byte.

Honestly, you should start an "AI-based" news service to get a huge amount of VC $$$ and do what they all do ... hire actual people to do the real work. (They usually outsource this part overseas for pittance wages, but they don't have to know WHERE you are hiring ;) )

So, over on Twit the head twit decided to hide likes, so they are now hiding likes. People are now replying "like" to tweets. And lots of people asking why hide tweets are being answered "to make an army of bot likes invisible". I think this has annoyed the ordinary twit user.

What's really crappy in all this is the previously you actually BOUGHT a version of the software, and if a newer version was too big or sucked or whatever you could still stick with what you have.
