Ten years old is the funniest age because you're watching The Red Green Show on TV and looking at the duct tape inventions and half of you is going "haha pretty funny!" but half of you is going "this could actually work if I can finish it before mom gets home."

I got into horror on VHS because I was experiencing suicidal thoughts by age 6 and man, having stacks of scary movies about monsters and adult issues made me feel so much better. It was so cathartic. Also I used to hide in cupboards for hours at a time pretending I was Newt from Aliens.

Just so people know, I do often delete old posts that lose relevance with time, or which we're just part of a fleeting conversation, or which have potential to attract arguments. If you can't find a post that may be why.

Lots of reasons I want to kick out the whimsigoth-type crowd but I often think of a time I saw someone post something like "Gothic fiction shouldn't include incest and rape" and the total lack of literacy and empathy that involved made me mad enough I had to leave the internet for a while

It must be really hard to get adopted as a teenager. Must be rough as Hell in ways I will never understand. What I do understand is the uniting power of using explosives for fun in a controlled environment, so I am playing to my strengths here

The deer grazing in my yard are unbothered by all of the explosions in the sky. My dogs are sitting under the table despite my gentle reassurances.

I like to take a kind of looney tunes approach--which animal can I see making a fun character for me? What makes me laugh and smile to think about? I think every animal has inherent comedic elements AND beauty.

Artist Hitomi Terasawa drew a meticulous cross-sectioned rendering of Hong Kong's infamous Kowloon Walled City before it was razed in 1994. Now we have rare scans revealing the inner workings of the labyrinth-like metropolis.

I wish more people understood that they can't expect art to be comforting or safe. They can *want* that, but they can't demand it or expect it. Art, as a whole, never *should* be a safe space. You cannot tell the truth and be perfectly safe because the truth often isn't safe.

Yep. One of the biggest blind spots people have is assuming that underneath, others share the same basic values as them. They have trouble imagining an ideology that is completely misaligned with theirs.

Yeah I don't really see an inherent problem with any kind of goofy or sneakily meaningful names in books for kids. Kids like that shit and think it's fun and it encourages them to use dictionaries and encyclopedias to look stuff up. The problem is that Rowling is an asshole.

If you are on a reality TV show and you have an interesting tattoo that I can only glimpse fleetingly, you should be required to show it to the camera and tell me what it is so I don't have to be distracted by my curiosity for the whole episode.

The idea that in order to matter a woman's story must end in triumph is so deeply reactionary, and I think it underpins so much of this "feminist retelling" cottage industry.
