If you are an enjoyer of anime, a new series called My Deer Friend Nokotan has been added to Amazon Prime video, 1 episode out as of last night, and it is pure ridiculous anime comedy about a girl named Shikanoko with deer antlers.

Elementary was a lot of good people doing good work, but in also giving themselves 22+ episodes each year gave them vastly more room to play, more little bits to pay off as they went, and a lot more to explore the very good conflict of Sherlock with his addiction to use, and to dull, his faculties.

I remember someone making a very smart point about how because Sherlock was essentially 3 movies each season, while they had some very good parts they were very limited in what they could do, the there simply wasn't much room for any sort of callback cleverness.

I feel more like he's a picture with the notes "wardrobe: nailed it. casting: this is now the benchmark for 'looks too much like a mass shooter's drivers license photo' please don't include that with rejection letter. security: please keep this at the front desk labeled 'nope' "

Yeah, the minute DeSantis got the least bit of national level exposure he was weird and awkward in ways that meant he couldn't do anything to usefully deflect from how basically everything about his career and policies is like a fractal turd

It saddens me that things like this are considered pointless. Yes, it doesn't have a win condition/solved state, but seeing what people can do collaboratively with a lack of direct communication tools is always fascinating. Hell, you could even try binary to ASCII comms if you work a little

It annoys the hell out of me, because there are legitimately a lot of things machine learning does quite fantastically, in particular image upscaling in PC gaming and all manner of image analysis tools to help find needles in haystacks of satellite imagery. But instead, this bullshit stock inflater

This is a passage from the book Ignition!, which in the early chapters had a lot of examples of why things like this were not used to slip the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of god, being more likely to give you a face-to-face after redistributing your workshop around town in burnt shards

Also, if that tickles your fancy, the channel also has a video for Hell Broke Luce, which you may recognize as the song playing in Punisher season 1 when Frank Castle feeds a few shitty mooks a sledgehammer

Ahhhh, thank you, I was not remotely as chip savvy at that time so there's a lot of that landscape that never really sunk into my brain, I honestly hadn't considered that it might have been legitimately performance based choice

I have been curious about that, whether it was something to make it prohibitive effort to move it to PC at a time when they didn't have much control through online systems, but don't recall seeing anything definitive on the topic.

It's frustrating that this isn't really news, I was in library school nearly 15 years ago, and one of the professors thought that video games were well archived/back compatible, and this was when before they had made the smart step to build consoles on x86

And one of my favorites, John Carmack using a formula to calculate the inverse square root that apparently nobody thought of before (and in his code is commented as // what the fuck?, suggesting he didn't write it, just found it) which essentially put Silicon Graphics out of business

While computing power has grown by wild leaps and bounds, where graphics are concerned the biggest advancements feel like cheating on test questions. Making Mario run on a home PC by just not re-rendering pixels that don't change, the first ray tracing graphics by tracing out from the viewers eye...

There is some fairness to the doubt at the time, as that did predate a surprising raft of technology to improve solar panel efficiency and weight (which allowed wider deployment than was previously possible) but I do wonder how much, as research money was bound to improve green energy.

This is the same fantasy at the heart of the ivermectin weirdness. Between the product is pipeline push for everything, and it being something produced by MSD, a fortune 50 company IIRC, if it had a wider market for them to chase they fucking well would.

The way that I've heard so many people very helpfully and clearly explain the Swiss Cheese Model of pandemic/disease response, and yet somehow people will just never internalize the part where each small but easy/minimally disruptive part of the response adds up, and just want "One Neat Trick" shit

Wasn't this the Sliders plot when Sci-Fi brought it back? The Cromags (one-off in season 2 or 3) had global ethnic conflict, one group developed sliding tech to escape, found all other worlds had the humans they found in their fossil records, and unified as a people to exterminate humanity

Looking to commission cover art from a real artist, no AI. Retro sci-fi space cowboy stuff, nice and pulpy! If that’s your jam or the jam of an artist in your Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, I’d love to see some of your work. Thanks!

But it's also kind of a ripoff when you see the French film The Bride Wore Black and realize that was the essential premise that he tried to make sound like he came up with it, he just tacked on a lot of flashier things

This has very much been my last decade. A department taking on more tasks and expanding old ones, or old systems changing to need more intervention without new staff. Finding ways to do it faster, tracked easier, even making simple API call to reduce my own effort, was creativity applied to my work.

Seconded, it has much the same energy as Douglas Adams sending a letter to the people who should have been developing a film with him but tried very little to contact him, so he sent them every conceivable number he might be at, including the butcher's counter at his grocery store

By needing someone to demonstrate enough personal buy-in to "ascend" they keep only those engaged and only show them a slight difference, and they are surrounded by those who reinforce those beliefs. Conservative media just happened to champion a Kool-aid they couldn't help but breathe

Cults and scams both find effective filters for this. For scams, things like deliberately wrong, like the typos in the "Nigerian Prince" scams were meant to be a first line filter for those who would be incredulous, leaving higher chance marks coming through. Cults run the esoteric religion filter.
