I agree. I don’t see an idealized image of someone with a carefully crafted persona as qualifying because it’s unattainable. The actual celebrity didn’t attain it either. But under that is also my problem with all the harms celebrity worship can do. All who’ve impacted my life were personal.

I hugely agree in the value of a person with a large audience being open about a less typical aspect of themselves. That’s a great influence on society when it’s for good stuff. And a risk when they’re promoting bigotry/hate etc. I’m sorry you didn’t grow up with more personal heroes in your life.

I’m not saying celebrities aren’t or can’t be great people. What I know him is has me thinking he’s likely a great person. He’s probably as awesome role model for people in his community/family. Who get to know him so much better than I ever could.

Hmm. So I agree with what you say about finding inspiration/guidance etc. in many more. I see a role model as more than that. I basically said it already in an other reply. A role model is a bigger concept to me where I think it’s key to really know the whole person.

An actual role model is bigger than the inspiration we can find everywhere. It’s seeing the whole person and their struggles and how they confront overcome those struggles. (And a thousand other things.) They show not just what we can attain but how to deal with what we can’t.
