Why is it that the folks who demand a lav are incredibly soft spoken during the event? Also why are they ten db louder in sound check

My problem is the people who keep asking for lavs can’t help but fiddle with it while they’re talking, which not only sounds terrible but looks terrible. At least I can EQ out handling with an SM58
