I assume that must have been a NAFTA thing. I wonder if that persisted after NAFTA was replaced? I actually know a few immigration lawyers I could ask, but I feel like there’d be a bill in the mail after I got my answer.

Generally in this situation, the employer has to demonstrate that the person coming to Canada to fill this role is being chosen over someone already in Canada for a good reason, like a labour shortage in that sector. It’s basically the only “easy” path to immigration other than family sponsorships.

Even other English speaking countries aren’t open to Americans. There’s really only 4 ways to immigrate to Canada: 1. Be rich 2. Have a job specialization that there aren’t enough Canadians to do 3. Be sponsored by a family member 4. Be exploited by recruiter for international university students

When I see Americans say “if ___ happens I’m moving to Canada” my first thought is “good fucking luck” You wouldn’t think so from how people here complain about south Asian immigrants, but there are very few paths to immigration in Canada, and “I don’t want to live in America” isn’t one of them.

Roughly equivalent to a 5% charge on the average EV. I have no interest in defending the abomination that is generative image AI, but I think at the scale of an individual person using it, there’s more meaningful criticisms than 3kWh or ($0.30 worth) of electricity.

And you can’t buy the thing anywhere, at least not here in Canada. It’s available in only two provinces. I bought my first non-Toyota in 15 years last fall, because I was dropping the Prius for a full EV and they wouldn’t tell the BXVX or whatever it’s called here.

The price of housing keeps climbing because homes keep being bought, flipped, and then sold for 2x as much 6 months later. Those inflated prices give landlords cover to jack rents way up, so renting stays more expensive than buying, and hardly anybody can save a down payment to buy.

There’s a whole additional layer that makes this even worse: the housing market is now an investment vehicle, as a speculative financial market, not just for landlords buying properties to have working class people pay off their mortgages, in what are essentially pump and dump schemes, but for homes

I don’t think they really have a chance at forming government again, but a new leader could go a long way in preventing a Conservative majority in 2025, and unlike the Liberals, the Cons don’t have much in the way of friendly support in parliament to support them with balance of power.

Trudeau is a liability to the party, and he has been for some time, simply because he’s become an easy punching bag for the Conservatives. Trudeau being PM allows them to continue fundraising off of him. The Cons certainly won’t admit it, but he’s a dream come true for them.
