Gugumijinawenaq = Place of our grandmothers (Gaspe Peninsula). Umiaminiqtalik = Wrecked boat left behind (Nunavut), near Immutaarrvik = Food cache with an old can of powdered milk. These places are called Erebus and Terror Bay today, which tells you where these names come from.

I have a map of Indigenous place names in what is now called Canada. Most are practical, as you’d expect, either a physical description (at the sandy depression, rapids with a lot of rocks) or what resources could be found there (where the outcropping contains some flint, abundance of fish). 1/

When I read the books I was struck by what a TERRIBLE society the wizard world would be to live in. Portraying a society as complex (which it wasn’t but just saying) & flawed is great, but it was just rigid & narrow-minded & BORING. I’d rather be a Muggle.
