One of the frightening dimensions of the Middle East conflict is just how unpopular both Hamas and the Netanyahu government really are among their citizenry. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/no-rallyin...
both these states have been failed by their respective governments, which are dominated by religious reactionaries. I am naive but I think if this ever calms down both people need to rid themselves of their current governments and elect secular modern world thinkers..wont happen but we can dream
The leaders are always the problem. The leaders have a problem (usually someone refusing to give them power), then manipulate regular people into believing that this problem is THEIR problem too, and then the regular people get yoked into solving the leaders problem and killing/dying in the process.
Call me a cynic, but Iβm sure Bibi brought Gantz and Eisenkot into the coalition to act as fall guys for failure. Bibi is always about Bibi.
One question I have is how accurate is polling from Gaza pre-October 7?
An important reason why this bloody conflict SHOULDN'T lead to an increase in Islamophobia OR antisemitism (although regrettably it will, or already is)
no trust in netanyahu because he didn't effectively cleanse the palestinean bloodlines as well as he should have
no trust in hamas because .... hamas is literally the only option and is basically a constant wartime resistance
The stench of both reaches to the heavens.
What annoys me is that progressives (of which I considered myself one, before all this) seem to overlook the viciousness and obscene cruelty of Hamas towards Israelis, and their indifference to the suffering of their own people.
the people of Israel own whatβs going on here. they donβt get a pass because they say they donβt like Netanyahu. They elected him and kept him there.
