As a geohazard expert and former geological survey director, I find it difficult to responsibly answer questions about individual landslides, floods, sinkholes, etc being caused by climate change. But, careful analysis of trends can speak to that issue (as well as other factors like land use).

The number of fatal landslides in 2024 continues to be much higher than in any previous recorded year. The reasons are not clear, but may be related to the unprecedented high global surface air temperature and global sea surface temperature.

Or in just about any area susceptible to landslides, just as is indiscriminate cutting into slopes. The key is always to understand the geological and/or geomorphological context through mapping and site characterization instead of blindly assuming—hoping—there will be no problems (until there are).

Footage captured during the event, and by drone afterwards, hints that the storage of crushed rock on top of the peat might have triggered the landslide. This is a known, and entirely avoidable, hazard in peatland areas.

Whether 7.2 or 7.4, it was a major landslide event. Maybe the only good thing with regard to landslides is that this is Taiwan's dry season. Some slopes—especially shallow colluvium responsive to individual storms and seasonal rainfall—may have been less susceptible to sliding than during wet times.
