Good point. I use them so rarely I did not even think to check. But I was tickled by "coconutpilled."

Similar, which is why I rarely look at the Disasters:EQ feed any more, as it's mostly bot reports (factual, but available elsewhere). Plus any post by anyone using the word "magnitude," which, I admit, can be ... interesting. Then today, a post about Roberto Clemente, so right up my alley. ;-)

I think a lot about how Clemente had the most Puerto Rican death a ballplayer can have: so busy trying to do something no one else was doing that he didn’t stop to think that he was getting on a colossal death trap—because he cared more about Nicaraguan victims of an earthquake than his own life.

Cool. But don't do it in earthquake country (most of the U.S.) without a structural engineer. (And I suspect my wind and flood colleagues would like a word as well.)

Does it mean: 1. "I leave work at 8 p.m. every night", or 2. "I go to bed at 8 p.m." 1 is a committed, even grueling, work schedule. 3000 billable hours. But fox et al will intentionally misread and mock it as 2.

Btw, has anyone recommended a good modern adaptation of Measure for Measure? Seems like it's really overdue and could easily and appropriately be titled "Me2."

A filmed performance, not a movie, but may I suggest that you owe it to yourself to find Much Ado w/ David Tennant and Catherine Tate. Clips are online. (It used to be on youtube, or maybe pbs, but I'm not finding it just now.)

Ok, but he'd better have a good and true reason for why this wasn't the case just 4 mos ago when he ran in primaries. Otherwise: "We told you so! Dems knew it, and they've been lying to you the last 4 years. What else are they lying about?"

I'd be interested in polls of just the persuadable T voters who've spent the last 8 years stewing in Fox disinfo about the Black, female, HBCU alumna, Gavin Newsom appointee from SF. But if she can bring to the stump the fire she once showed on the Judicial Comm, I'm all for it.

I have opinions about Harris, but what Biden supporters think of her is secondary. From the start of the campaign, the goal has been to peel off just a few % of the persuadable T voters, and I suspect Harris will have a much harder time doing that than Biden.

I do appreciate your candor, and I will admit to being perhaps not skeptical enough of Biden's capacity. But the dithering is worse than the decision. Stay in or bow out for cause, but get your party in line Joe! Dems: Know the line, and stick to it. 100% Joe. If he decides no, 100% Kamala. LFG.

Because the appearance of unanticipated instability -- which the media will hype for days or longer -- plays directly into the b.s. T has been spouting since the days of Sleepy Joe. Imagine: "See, we were right all along! Dems are liars and frauds just like we said."

JFC. These unofficial media-prompted speculations from Grijalva and Castro are unhelpful, but it's what you get when thoughtful Ds get sound-bited and the campaign fails to reign them in with a clear message: 1. It's Joe's call. 2. Til then, we are 100% with Joe. 3. Then, and only then, 100% Harris.

Agree, interesting, but why not just build more front-of-the-meter, well-regulated, utility-scale BESS (to go with utility-scale wind & solar)? What advantage are they getting by putting oversized batteries into old houses? (idk, is there an analogy here to Uber or AirBnb?)

David Bonowitz's avatar David Bonowitz @dbonowitz.bsky.social

To be clear, I am 100% in favor of more BESS, esp to support renewables. And the idea of "crowdsourcing" the grid by using batteries in dwellings is -- as you said -- intriguing. I just don't know if our codes are prepared for the blurring of long-standing distinctions. But we can MAKE them ready.

Because they're being asked to the job of utility-scale energy but perhaps without protection from code-level environmental loads (wind, earthquake, etc.). It's possible to do it well. I don't know what design standards they have in mind.

This is a long thread, and though I'm tempted to get to all of it, I'll just note: -- 98% of U.S. buildings from the 1920s are NOT gone. If some were demolished en masse, it's more likely because of "urban renewal" etc. -- You might be confusing the durable structure w/ other building components.

Ever double-check the date on something to make sure it's not April 1?

But no. The "Doc Hollywood" piece in the July 1 New Yorker is as damning an indictment of American healthcare and celebrity obsession as I have ever read.

Curious about your thoughts, @mollyknight.bsky.social

I confess a similar concern, though: 2026 will bring both the 250th anniversary of our founding, and the 25th anniversary of September 11. And the thought of T presiding at either of those events turns my stomach.

Looking forward to learning more, but I've been wary of something like this coming. By installing in single-family dwellings, they might be able to take advantage of relatively lax building codes, leading to possible fire and hazmat risks for the residents and systemic unreliability in the grid.

Something I'm thinking about that seems trivial but is motivating: 2026 will bring two important American anniversaries. It will be 250 years since our founding and 25 since September 11. The idea that T will be the voice or face of our nation for either one just turns my stomach.

Once again I submit that if Black D1 athletes and their white athlete allies were to publicly announce that due to these policies they would rather play at Michigan or UConn than at Florida, Bama, or LSU, things would reverse. It's not their job, but they would be more influential than we are.

As I said, rational or not. My point is that the Dems could have and should have solved this with a strong statement 4 months ago instead of having to squirm through a week of media nonsense -- no doubt including a bunch of absurd "expert" opinion tomorrow morning.

Yep. Ever since "Biden's old" started (w/ the Sleepy Joe b.s. in 2016), we have never been more than a bicycle accident away from a full blown media-invented crisis. And as I said 4 months ago (ad nauseam), "Biden's old" is really anxiety about Harris, and Dems could have solved it then, goddammit.

It's as wrong to panic now as it was to get fist-pumping psyched after SOTU. Takes 24 hours or so for that to sink in, in both cases. (That said, being fist-pumping psyched is a lot more fun.)

Lawrence, Thanks for the shout-out. (And sorry for the delay. Deadlines have kept me off the site for almost a week.) I'm no energy code expert, but starting to work on the 2027 I-codes, and will be proposing they treat utility-scale battery storage as essential. Naturally, industry will oppose.

Thanks. I've been looking for this too, as the buildings used for these facilities are notoriously cheap and damage-prone. I thought I saw a contrarian take that data centers are a tiny portion of electricity use, but I can't find it now. (Maybe KetanJoshi, but now I can't find him either?)
