Even the acknowledgments page is lovely. Maraniss opens by thanking his father, “who grew up in Boston but taught me never to cheer for the Red Sox because they were the last team to integrate,” and who dropped the Dodgers when they moved west. Now those are sports grudges behind which I can get.

I finished Maraniss’ Clemente bio yesterday, after months of putting it off because I just had the sad parts left. It’s a great book, and a spur to remember how great we’re all called to be, whatever our purpose here.

You know how important it was for me that the team I adopted has enjoyed a near-unbroken chain of Puerto Ricans in charge, from Litos to Machete and Vaz to Caratini and Espada (OK, fine, Cintrón is there too), and other than the Twins I can’t think of a team that’s been more boricua in recent years.

I think a lot about how Clemente had the most Puerto Rican death a ballplayer can have: so busy trying to do something no one else was doing that he didn’t stop to think that he was getting on a colossal death trap—because he cared more about Nicaraguan victims of an earthquake than his own life.
