NEW BLOG POST! In which I dig into all the weird and wonderful programming quirks of our quasi-national commercial radio networks, many of which only exist for licensing reasons, before many of them are abruptly culled FOR EVER.

That looks like one. The version we used had an integrated mic/speaker and was modified to use an external broadcast mic. I think the range was about half a mile … up the hill to where the car gave a signal back to the studio. (Long time ago: memories may be incomplete 😊)

Back in the early local radio days we had a tiny UHF transceiver made by Pye called a Pocketphone. It could be used as a short-range adjunct to the radio car.

The Ferryman down at the Dublin Quay is a great pub. We got locked in at closing followed by strong tea on a tall ship moored outside. Matt Molloy was in the bar but he was one Chieftain I didn’t know. Happy days. (You keeping well?)

I was briefly acquainted with Yes’s engineer, Eddie Offord, and popped into Advidion while they were adding the vocals to this. I had never seen cut-edited 2-inch multitrack tapes before (or since) and found it quite amazing.

Wasn’t there a bit of Beatles singing ‘Rock and Roll Music’ in that scene as well? Brilliant stuff.

Shame! You can sometimes clear things if you can ask the right person. I cleared the HHGTG theme for video simply because I knew someone at the record company.

I came across this decade-old piece about replacing things in films/tv because of rights issues … and why, as a result, people prefer discs. Reminds me of one of my odder tasks in my BBC Enterprises days.

A local hostelry had closed its evening Italian offering and has been selling the remnants of the wine list for £8.50 a bottle. I definitely picked up a couple of bargains there including a 15% red that had the depth and complexity to handle the strength. #Jammy

The first department I worked in at Broadcasting House made the test card music tapes. It’s always amazed me how obsessed people got about them.

It would have been my dad’s 100th birthday today. Veteran tank driver from the ‘forgotten 14th’ in Burma and India. Purveyor of yarns and knitting patterns around the Potteries. Past chair of the Uttoxeter Angling Association and lifelong fisher of the Dove. Here always 😊.
