Digital Curator @BL_DigiSchol@techhub.social at British Library. Usually working on something about collections as data, UX, data science and crowdsourcing in cultural heritage/GLAMs/digital humanities; museum technology. She, they. Not often here.

I was once on a flight that landed in Austria instead of Slovakia, but actually it was less hassle than the time the flight diverted to a 'London' airport on the opposite side to the intended London airport. Anyway, glad you made it back!

Probably. Everything from concerns about the implications for creators, the risks of undue prominence and out of context uses of material by or about living people, through to the brief moment of actually making money by licensing access to digitised content to AI companies hungry for more 'tokens'

"I worry that important community-sourced collections remain difficult to discover by researchers seeking out these voices and perspectives. Without major institutional commitments to maintain their web presence and interfaces... these carefully curated and planned collections may be underused."

LLMs are useless for lawyering and other tasks involving actual analysis and understanding not because the technology hasn't gotten there yet, but because that's fundamentally not what statistical word association is capable of doing. Not only can't it understand, it's not even trying to understand.

Mask bans are evil and dystopian and I am appalled that they’re even being proposed. Wearing masks to protect your health and the health of others needs to be recognized as a right for all and an absolutely essential protection for those who would otherwise be unable to participate in society

A reminder for non-academics that if you ever can't find access to an academic's paper or article, you should feel free and encouraged to reach out to them to ask for a pre-print version. They will not think of it as an imposition; they will, in fact, be EXTREMELY gratified by your interest.

An easy way to support your public library is to make use of it—even if only to visit. We keep (anonymized) statistics not only on circulation totals but on attendance & visits and even on patron-staff interactions. Big numbers please trustees and municipal/county administrators. 📚

First of all, has a person ever looked more mischievous? I wish I knew her. Secondly, this is a miniature portrait from around 1660. It comes with overlays that allow you to change her appearance for fun. Filters from 500 years ago lol!

A manifesto for the liberal arts, which, at their root, prepare you for the things you can't prepare for. What does the future hold? "You don’t know. Your teacher doesn’t know. Your school doesn’t know. Your future employer doesn’t know. Nobody knows. Not really."

I've recently been thinking about how hard the media went on declaring Media Studies a "Mickey Mouse" degree back in the mid 2000s, how poor media literacy has become, and how convenient that is for media outlets with ill intent these days.
