Film history is full of this kind of expansion and contraction. Every low-budget highly-creative indie boom crystalizes into studio trend-chasing until the system gets smashed and rebuilt. Entertainment is going to look different, but I think human hearts will still beat through it all.

My niece being into making TikToks and being curious about practical effects makes me hopeful that while we may be in/heading into a dark age of film as studios cannibalize themselves, but kids are always going to pick up cameras and run around making movies in the woods.

That’s the shame of the system too—there’s so little friction to it that I don’t know why it had to be there at all. It is the type of game where completing side activities can still be a fun reason to boot the game back up for a little after the story. But loot ain’t it.

But we do this with anything, right? I remember the phase I went through where I couldn’t be a writer without a Moleskine and a fancy pen. Like a 50 cent notebook and an old pencil don’t do the same damn job. Working with what you have can help you figure out how much you like the activity at all.

It’s tough because an appeal of skating is looking cool and kids don’t realize that a complete board ain’t cheap. But I assure you skaters at the park would rather see a kid on a cheap board than another of those damn scooters! They’ll get hype and support, not teasing.

A tip for parents of kids starting to skateboarding: Everything you’d want to learn in the first six months can be done on a board from Wal-Mart or a Penny board. I see kids in the park sad they don’t have a “real” board, and I try to remind them that they can still learn with what they have.

Love that game. Would’ve liked it to be a little less repetitive, but it was fun and a great representation of the characters. I really wish it didn’t have its loot system, but it’s so easy to mash upgrades to get the number to go up enough that you don’t need to worry about it much.

I’ve always treated her and her brother like little fires that need to be fueled. Whatever they are interested in, I started breaking the furniture to keep that flame going. I pitched making a special effect as an arts and crafts project with her, so now I’m looking up tons of tutorials.

She also apparently keeps telling everyone she sees about the movie, and told me how she had to explain what POV and a first person POV was to her grandmother. I always feel like a dork for treating movie night like film school, but it seems like she digs it??

Been showing my niece horror movies. Friday the 13th clicked with her in awesome ways. I’m always asking about the books she’s reading in school, but I’ve never heard her talk about characters, plot, or themes like she has with Friday the 13th? And she keeps asking how the practical effects work!

I’ve never liked Geralt’s design and vibe. He’s like if someone caught themselves being too into Sephiroth and immediately had to sketch a “no homo” version to to impress the bros. Too edgy and insecure 😂

Witcher 3 is $4 so I guess I’ll try it again. Played about an hour through Game Pass a couple years ago, and I didn’t really feel it. But I hear such good things about the quest design that I want to push through it a little further.

The bit driving me bonkers is the flattening of “younger and more vulnerable years” to “young.” Even if you’re simplifying the sentence as a learning aid, vulnerable is doing a lot of heavy lifting to tell you what’s happening!

A debate moment that bothered me that I haven’t seen discussed is when Trump said Biden never fires anyone it was the perfect opportunity for Biden to say “a good leader hires people smarter than him, and I have a great team that’s here to stay. Here is a list of my cabinet’s accomplishments.”

My daughter just freaked out because she didn’t have a cat tail to pretend to be Cat Boy from PJ Masks, so I had to figure out how to quickly make one out of an old scarf. Then she asked for the special watch they use for their magical girl transformations, so I guess I do crafts now.

This is another case of these networks building up libraries of quality shows and movies, but then chasing having the most Content. People pay for Disney Plus to get Bluey and Mickey and Moana. Why do they think they need to slop Cocomelon and Blippi onto it?

Disney Plus’ junior mode used to be a pretty reliable curation of shows for my kid, but this mixing of shows from Hulu sucks. So much trash now. Caught her watching Cocomelon today! I’ve spent three years avoiding Cocomelon!

I feel like I need to watch Superstore. Otherwise my favorite modern sitcoms are Modern Family and Community. But these are all old now! The real demon here is that networks don’t make as many of these shows as they used to.

I think sitcoms maybe work best for me when they can be boiled down to “a group of people are trapped in a sisyphian hell of their own making, and the show ends if they escape.” Which ironically is maybe why I like the Good Place, but don’t love it like I love Cheers.

I regularly watch a lot of Friends and Cheers, and I’ve been wondering why I think “they don’t make shows like this anymore.” I think there are still great sitcoms. I’ve been wondering if what I feel is how modern sitcoms have bigger dreams and stories for their characters.

I’m sorry. I know it’s a different type of trauma, but I felt this way when I had a rough discovery about my dad not being my biological father. “Long lost father returns and is manipulative and shitty” is another common plot that’s hard to avoid when it happens to you.

I think I went for how often I can put on any episode of the show and be happy or how much of a chokehold the show had on me when I watched. Like, Parenthood is not a show I run around recommending, but it was comfortable and we did not miss a single episode as it aired.

It is basically Dark Souls 4, so conflating them isn’t far off. Same systems and mechanics in a new setting. But I think the open world structure and a bunch of other tweaks make it a lot friendlier.

If you mean the DLC for Elden Ring, I assume it is harder than the base game. But the hill I will die on is that those games (and especially Elden Ring) are not as difficult as fans want you to think. Elden Ring has friendlier checkpoints and fast travel than Super Mario Bros.

As I age, the importance of a full routine is becoming pretty apparent with my skating. I took 20 years off, and coming back to it reveals weaknesses. Like, shoulders do a lot more work than I remember! Little bird wings would also help with balancing 🐦 (I just remembered you made SkateBird 😂)

CrossFit is another one of those sports/activities that I know my family would say “good for you!” if I joined instead of constantly judging me for skateboarding. Most physical activities will bust you up at some point. At least skateboarders know that’s the agreement going in 😂

(The real secret is probably a multi-generational household, a mom who works from home, and a dad who is a full-time caregiver. We’re pretty lucky with this setup. But for real this kid eats so many cheez-its and donuts while staring at her iPad all day.)
