there’s been a years-long, pretty successful push in pdx organizing spaces to make everything masked - even outdoor events, oftentimes. to paraphrase micah bazant, our movements can’t afford to lose anyone’s wisdom, energy, and solidarity bc our spaces are inaccessible

there are 2 general answers to the contemporary Jewish question (how can Jews live well amongst other peoples?) and tablet is fiiirmly on the side of ‘try to cater to power in the hopes they will grant us privileges’ i guess

it is just a funny moment having been raised with the deeply-ingrained lesson that when things get bad, we should get out if we want to survive. how do we know when the tipping point is?

i think about this a lot, as someone pretty committed to fighting incipient fascism AND as someone literally only here bc my ancestors fled their homes again and again over the course of centuries, including in living memory. while those who stayed and fought were killed. so.

controversial take but at its core the substantial difference between this and tools that a lot of queer organizer-types use in relationship conflict (ie RADAR, self-facilitated containers, applying organizing principles) is that these are monetized

the shelter system in Oregon is run by a literal mafia of Community Action Agencies that have designated territories, no interest in changing the status quo, and jealously guard their lucrative govt contracts. and those are the ‘good ones’

It’s like a very long epic fantasy series but there are multiple species/societies that are very fleshed out, some of which have had very stable cultures for millennia. Written by an archaeologist/anthropologist. Lots of interactions between growing empires & nomadic groups, esp in later books

The Moroccan historian Abdellah Laroui periodizes the 9th-13th centuries as a time of empire building & 14th-15th cents as fragmentation, until Ahmad al-Mansur (1578). IMO the 'contiguousness' is one of the biggest political history debates. If of interest, his book is free at the internet archive

by Moroccan monarchy do you mean that there was at least one person who claimed to be the sultan? bc the Alaouis have only ruled since the mid-1600s. which is also a long time! but there has not been a continuous monarchy since the Idrisids

fr tho with our financialized economy - global securities are valued higher than annual global GDP - shifting regulatory mechanisms is the primary way to create new free inputs for generating wealth. at a macro-scale, the double movement of our time is the struggle around financial regulation

the purpose of compulsory national service is nation building. so one can see why it’s appealing for right-wing leaders who are seeing the collapse of national consciousness. anything that gets built or done thru that labor is a secondary outcome

for ex in Oregon a number of local police/sheriff depts don’t reliably report crime data to the FBI. that would pull down OR’s ranking in their methodology regardless of any empirical reality

i looked at their methodology briefly. if i had to guess, their “hate crime score” is 1) garbage; 2) heavily weights places where queer ppl report hate crimes to local law enforcement; 3) systematically pulls down states w (relatively) good legislative protections

post-ww2 european leadership (and US military commanders!) preferred to leave Jews in concentration camps over letting them into their countries. to me that gives weight to Sherene Seikaly and Max Ajl's argument that EU Jews could only *become* European once they were outside of Europe (in I/P)

not generally taught in US ww2 history but close to 200k polish jews did go back to Poland from the USSR. then there were a number of pogroms in Poland post-shoah from 1945-46, so many went to DP camps in Germany - often former concentration camps. the last Jewish DP camp didn’t close until 1957
