Luis Bunuel called it one of the world’s ten best films, Ernst Lubitsch proclaimed it one of the best directed movies he’d ever seen & Andre Breton said it was a triumph of surrealist thought. I saw this yesterday and it was deeply compelling, funny and watchable. And new enough to audiences that it's not yet up on Wikipedia. It's a great postwar encounter of old Europe with new America, the latter played with uncanny, disorienting geometry by Los Angeles. 1/

After all these years LA finally loves SMOG! Great sold out reception for the new 4K restoration of Franco Rossi’s Italian masterpiece from 1962. Thanks to all the cinephiles who came to the Academy Museum screening this afternoon.

As everyone filed out of the Cinematheque on Friday night a photographer came over and asked to take my picture: “Sit in one of the seats and look at the screen.” Zero prep, zero lights, and over in about a minute. Thanks Maria Lupu - they came out dandy.

When I was VP of History & Preservation for the Academy the project I was most passionate about was the restoration of Milos Forman’s original theatrical cut of “Amadeus” - Bravo to Michael Pogorzelski for his extraordinary effort to get this version back in the public eye.

Modern American cinema begins with Roger Corman. Without him we would not have Coppola, Scorsese, Bogdanovich, Nicholson, Demme and countless others. My film school was a drive in theater in the 1970s and Roger Corman was the Dean.

You are correct - that running time is wrong. The English version we are showing is the shorter theatrical cut. I do actually prefer that cut - a little less languid

As soon as I heard that MVD was going to be releasing THE LINGUINI INCIDENT on Blu-ray, the first thing I thought about was the story Maura Tierney told me about being in the film. She's barely even in the thing, but she still walked away with a Bowie story for the ages.

So I feel honored that his wife Chaz has invited us to screen “Man on the Moon” on the 25th anniversary of Ebertfest - the film gala Roger founded in Champagne, IL👍 ebertfest.com/films/man-moon

Letterboxd says I watched 350 movies in 2023.  Let’s say that each movie is two hours long (for every “Napoleon” there’s a “Duck Soup”).  That’s roughly 700 hours. That’s 29 days. That’s a month.

I watched a February amount of movies last year.

A few years back a wax museum was going out of business & my writing partner splurged to buy these amazing figures of Tommy & his brother Dick. We were lucky to have Tom visit our office one afternoon to hang out with the fake Tommy that he posed for 30 years earlier. R.I.P. to this comedy legend.
