The monsoon has arrived in the Himalaya and already is bringing flooding to the Teesta River. This is entirely expected. The 2023 GLOF raised the river bed a lot along much of the river, so it takes much less water to flood these areas. Compare the same spot from the article, March 2024, and 2022.

The number of fatal landslides in 2024 continues to be much higher than in any previous recorded year. The reasons are not clear, but may be related to the unprecedented high global surface air temperature and global sea surface temperature.

Here's the open street map of the area. There are several sparsely distributed houses. Assuming openstreetmap underestimates the building footprint, and commonly missing rural houses, the fatality estimates may unfortunately be accurate.

The #PapuaNewGuineaLandslide is thought to have buried 2,000 people, which could make it amongst world's deadliest landslides. In these Planet Labs satellite images from May 26, 23, & 15, you can see small precursory landslides on the slope before main failure last Friday. @davepetley.bsky.social

Thank you to all presenters and participants of #EGU24 session NH3.6 "Space and time forecasting of #landslides"
For the entire duration, we constantly had about a hundred people in the room who were actively engaged.

My experience over the last two years working with this international and multi-disciplinary group of scientists has driven home how synergy and collaboration really brings forth creative research despite our fair share of setbacks and challenges.

☝️NEVER pass up a collaboration opportunity.
During #EGU22, I met Kushanav Bhuyan. We discussed a new project concept: an automated #landslide type classifier. I introduced the idea to Kamal Rana. Two years later, we have a working prototype:

Brilliant new planning guidance to manage landslide risk in New Zealand, produced by @gnsscience, has much wider applicability:- eos.org/thelandslide...

I hope, I explain my ideas better in real life. Assuming my conference performance is the same as this video, I'm truly sorry for all those who had to endure listening me.

Could you give an example @sjponeill.bsky.social?
I guess, it's out of scope but I want to be sure. If people were ignoring the warnings of natural disasters, it may indeed fit the topic.

That's exactly what I'm after. Thank you very much! In any case, it's always really upsetting to read such incidents which could have been avoided.

Thank you very much for your suggestions.
I am more interested in civilian fatalities, e.g., individuals took shelter in a house near the deposit of an earlier landfall (instead of leaving the area), followed by a larger failure, burying that exact house of shelter.

La Niña & El Niño cycles leave traces on #landslides:
👉 La Niña years --> more frequent landslides
👉 El Niño years --> temporally concentrated landslide patches
(Vega et al., 2024; doi.org/10.1007/s103...)
Could the distinction ease predicting landslides during El Niño?

#ClimateCrisis hazards, e.g. #landslides, force millions to relocate, yet many return to hazard zones due to poor planning & lack of support—Serwajja et al. doi.org/10.1016/j.ijdr….
While 24M displaced today may sound manageable, this number will breach 200M in 2050.
Time to start planning actions!

I just read the article "Between a rock and a hard place: Vulnerability and precarity in rural Nepal" (doi.org/10.1016/j.ge...).
Full of questions:
How to protect people from #landslides, if they have more pressing concerns?
Could this be the point where international policy should interfere?

Late #Disasters clearly demonstrated that Natural Hazards are not entirely Natural. We contribute to their occurrences more than we think.
Join me and my colleagues during #EGU24 in session NH9.9 to discuss together the human role in causing "natural" hazards.

It's time to start thinking about the #EGU24 abstracts.
Among the most popular #Landslide sessions, the one targeting landslide forecasting, is as usual listed. Join us in discussing how to predict these deadly hazards to aid global #DRR efforts.
