out of curiosity I searched for "open the kimono" with some jp words for etymology and... japanese folk are pretty "wtf? where'd this come from?" about it. closest they have is, 胸襟を開く, kyoukin wo aku, which is translated more like 'bare one's bosom' lit. opening a type of collar/chest garment
