May #Temperature highlights from the #CopernicusClimate Change Service (#C3S)

Last month was:

🌡warmer than any previous May on record, at 0.65°C above the 1991-2020 average;
🌡 the 12th month in a row that is the warmest on record for the respective month of the year.

❄️ #Antarctic sea ice extent was 8% below average, the 6th lowest extent for May on record
❄️ #Arctic sea ice was slightly below average, with concentration anomalies mixed across the Arctic Ocean

💧wetter than average over much of Iceland, UK and Ireland, central and most of south-eastern Europe;

🌡️📈 May 2024 was the warmest May on record, marking the 12th consecutive month in which the global average temperature reached a record value for the corresponding month. 

The #C3S data were cited by the UN Secretary General, António Guterres.

Glaciers in the Alps lost 10% of their volume in the last two years.

Northwestern Europe had its warmest June, while September was the warmest on record for Europe as a whole.

During the peak of a heatwave in July 2023, a record 41% of southern Europe was affected by ‘strong’ to ‘extreme heat stress’.

Extreme heat has been the leading cause of weather- and climate-related deaths in Europe since 1970, with a substantial increase since 2000.

🌊📈The 2023 average sea surface temperature (SST) for the European ocean  was the warmest on record, according to #ESOTC.  
  
Parts of the Mediterranean Sea & the northeastern Atlantic Ocean saw their warmest annual average SST on record.

🌬️📊 #CopernicusAtmosphere forecasts show the exceptionally large-scale #SaharanDust transport across Europe. 

The latest episode has been leading to high PM10 concentrations at ground level for the Iberian Peninsula, and some parts of France and Germany.
