Most were recorded in 2021. I especially recommend the last half of the course, where I was able to draw on my prior research. The lectures on C67, BSOF, Barmen, Belhar, and election are the best.

ICYMI: I published an essay with Jason Bruner on the documentary Essential Church, a piece of evangelical propaganda that casts pastor John MacArthur in the role of prophet against the totalitarian Covid policies of Governor Newsom. on the very day the Supreme Court's conservatives said 'we know best' and put themselves in charge of complicated agency decisions one of the geniuses confused nitrous oxide and nitrogen oxide. So they had to have a do over. Not exactly an auspicious start.

I wrote a 2000-word piece on the Church of England's Living in Love and Faith process, which has carefully attempted to "safeguard" the church's "essential doctrines." What is meant by "essential," however, is open to significant scrutiny.

I have no idea who that is, but I desperately want it to be Robert Anton Wilson. He was an editor at Playboy during this time, and it would be awesome if he was secretly translating theology on the side.

I have uploaded to YouTube a version of a lecture I gave to my DMin students about my new book. In 47 minutes I take listeners through the whole book, drawing out the key parts of my argument.

If you're curious about my book, this is the place to start.

I just finished this new book by @dwcongdon.bsky.social and I can’t recommend it enough. His survey of the search for modern Christian identity is highly illuminating, and he says what needs to be said: The only viable option for progressive churches is theological pluralism.

Given the news about Matt Warner, I'm reminded of a passage from my book where I look at Wheaton College's history of termination as a case study in how orthodoxy operates institutionally. Wheaton here serves as a proxy for many similar stories at other institutions.

Who is the "they" here? Conservative Christians? I think that's true, though the nature of this ownership has changed. For a long time it was because they held to the Bible alone in contrast to later distortions of doctrine. More recently, there's been an emphasis on tradition and history.

My discussion of liberal Protestants focuses on the way many of them helped legitimize and even pave the way for the Christian Right. That is to say, I want to break down the often artificial and overly strict distinction between mainline and evangelical Protestantism.

This is an interesting remark. I might have to explore some of this in a future project. My book is primarily about the conservative wing, since I'm trying to expose the way their theology is not simply a continuous adherence to some "original Christianity." There's more to say on the liberal side.

Wow. Meta has blocked all links to the Kansas Reflector—the nonprofit newsroom that broke the story of the Marion County Record police raid—likely because they published a column this morning criticizing the platform's censorship of climate change-related ads.
