20 years ago today (!!) I sent out this email announcing my first-ever show on #WFMU, which took place in the wee hours of the morning on July 5, 2004.
Tomorrow I’ll celebrate by starting with a selection of songs that I played on that very first show. I hope you can tune in at noon EDT!

I got an advance PDF of Hello Darkness #1 from @boom-studios.com and I read it and enjoyed it. Nice mix of ongoing stories, done-in-ones, weird bits and pin-ups. Swell line-up of talent, everything looks great. Worth checking out/supporting. Anthologies are a hard sell, so, good luck, everyone.

Today's Patreon post: Sketches/notes for an unproduced Milk & Cheese superhero strip, worked up for the similarly unproduced 8th issue (Milk & Cheese # Hate). Going by percentages, there's potentially 7 or 8 good gags in there. Maybe 9!

Yesterday's Patreon post was about Fight-Man, because someone sent me some interview questions about one of the few Marvel characters even the IP lawyers never heard of. W/four pages of pencils, scanned from shitty Xeroxes made at the Marvel offices back in the day.

You can tell when Kurtzman is more engaged and/or finds a strong theme. I've read the Cochran volumes multiple times and can barely remember any of the Davis and Severin stories.

Elder, then Wood, then...Davis and Severin are incredible, I love them both, but if you think about it, people don't really talk about their stories. They got the iffy scripts and neither are able to elevate them, despite Davis's naturally funny/energetic style and Severin's technical chops/detail.

I think you just helped me a dodge a bullet, I was eyeballing Dashcam on Tubi for a "draw while it's on" watch.

It's heart is smack-dab in the right place. It's a movie I want to love. I think I would have had more fondness for it and give it more of a break if I saw it earlier than I did (my early 50s).

I like the monster designs, esp the Gill-Man, but the kids are poorly written/acted, which weighs the good stuff down so it never really takes off. It's like if Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein was The Ritz Brothers Meet Frankenstein. There's no center, and the monsters are blanks as characters.

Man, I have two long-standing blind spots and those are Wages of Fear and Sorcerer. I have to remedy that before I kick.

Monster Squad is a mess, I don't love it, but it's better than The Goonies. So is carpal tunnel and gum surgery. I never saw The Explorers, which is weird, bc iirc that's Joe Dante and he's almost always worth checking out.

That scene is magic. I didn't want it to end. Or the movie.

I wish I could talk more about all these awful movies but I'm allergic to superhero movies, Tarantino, and Tarantino-wannabes, so I haven't seen a lot of them. But The Goonies. The fucking Goonies. I saw it when it came out and it made me want to torch children. Temple of Duh-lite horseshit. Awful.

I had a really rough time with Black Rainbow, it just did not work for me and I was coming off the high of Mandy and had hopes for it. I hated enough of It Follows to almost tip it into incensed, but there were a few scenes I liked, so I'm kinda hold-my-tongue-mad at it when people go on about it.

I think he's vastly overrated by a lot of people. His film's are mostly lovely to look at but lunkheaded, and his low points are expensive nonsense. There's less there than meets the eye.

It's a Target bag. There is a Superman cape, though, tucked atop the ashes of the much-missed Mr. Jinx.

I'm not up to that era, yet. I like any time Schulz does a strip about comics, so I'll probably really dig that.
