This book excerpt by @jenniferberkshire.bsky.social and @jackschneider.bsky.social lays out a persuasive case for why public schools and the ideal of public education should be defended not as productivity engines but as a common good.

Problem is I’m not sure that flies in 2024, which saddens me.

Why don't we allocate education the way we allocate other goods in a capitalist society? Because sometimes markets fail. And sometimes such failures are intolerable. We explore on the latest @haveyouheard.bsky.social

Since 1975, students with disabilities have been guaranteed a free and appropriate education. Now, half a century later, privatization efforts are threatening to roll-back their rights. The latest @haveyouheard.bsky.social:

Democracy shouldn’t be about vanquishing the opposition. (And it certainly shouldn’t involve misrepresenting the views of people—me, in this case!—you don’t agree with.)

"Rejecting the idea that they are solely responsible for their economic futures, a new generation is increasingly attracted to the concepts of collective interests and organized labor. They might even embrace another old notion: learning for learning’s sake." My latest piece with Jennifer Berkshire

Is it true that our education system needs to begin churning out more STEM grads in order to stave off economic disaster?

Very pleased to be hosting @jackschneider.bsky.social for a joint HGSE Measurement Lab + Meira Levinson "LevLab" book talk today at noon. His book, "Off the Mark," with @ehutt.bsky.social was an academic highlight of my winter break. I am sure the discussion will be spirited!

Bait-and-switch is an old retail tactic. You lure customers in with promises of a deep discount, only to inform them that the deal has a catch. The real price tag, it turns out, is quite a bit more.

Guess who learned the trick?

“It’s one thing to smear teachers or to level outrageous claims about the curriculum. It’s another thing entirely to convince local voters – people who have a stake in the schools actually functioning – that you have the good sense and the practical skills to oversee school district operations.”

Nice piece from Richard Rothstein in his newsletter today. In short, we short-change kids when we claim that teachers are the chief determiners of student achievement. Instead of fulfilling our obligations, we engage in magical thinking.

When I say that the Democratic Party laid the runway that Betsy DeVos and her allies are launching their voucher jets from, what I mean is this... David Osborne, advisor to Clinton/Gore, in 1993: "Let the parents pick the school and have the money follow the child."

If you read only one piece from the latest History of Education Quarterly, check out this dialogue between Johann Neem and Carol Burris on the meaning and purpose of public education.

These dialogues are what I'm proudest of as an editor. And this one's a gem.

We talk about WVU at about ~20:00. The whole episode is vital listening on the dismantling of U.S. public higher ed.

This is the chef’s kiss of silly defenses of testing: “Without standardized testing, we won’t know where to put the most resources, or what the contours of the problems students face even look like.”

Nice little write up of MCIEA, where I used to work with @jackschneider.bsky.social. There’s a lot of clamor among some families in my kids’ school about the school quality tiers and how to get a “top tier” ranking. Amazing how hard it is to unlearn that programming. medium.com/boston-paren...
